How to split council tax in a house share?
Comments

When I flat shared we always split it equally, never thought twice about it.0

You forgot to factor in the 25% " most attractive housemate" discount.
But, seriously, its actually up to the three of you to discuss it and decide what split of the bill will cause least discord. Some here think it should be a flat 3 way share, others in line with the rent split. Ultimately you're all grown up enough to have signed a tenancy agreement and so should be able to sit down and work out what you feel is fair. There isn't a right or wrong answer to your question.0 -

I would pay four months each.
Any council in England must allow you to pay over 12 months (for the full year) on request unless you've lost the right to pay by instalments.
Unless the DD is from a joint bank account then changing it every few months can be a pain - there's no guarantee that the council will action a change in time to prevent a month being lost by the time the new demand notice is issued to show the change, Using a standing order would be easier as it can be setup over in a matter of minutes and you don't need the council to get involved.I live in a two bed house. My room is slightly bigger and has two people whilst my friend has his own room. We split the rent 60:40 but the bills are all a third each.
CraigI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
The difference is 3.33% (a third - 30%).. is it really worth the headache? I do think council tax is another bill which should be split between the individuals, regardless of room arrangements. However even just for simplicity, I'd split all bills in 3 by putting equal amounts into one bank account and paying all bills out of there (note don't make them in joint names though, as that would link you financially).0

If there are 3 adults living in the property then just spilt the council tax 3 ways- as I imagine you would do with any other utility like gas, electricity or water?0
