How to split council tax in a house share?

Hi,

I live in a two bed house. My room is slightly bigger and has two people whilst my friend has his own room. We split the rent 60:40 but the bills are all a third each.

How should council tax be split? Initially I assumed a third each but I think the room arrangement should be factored into it ie. 30/30/40 (60 for me and my room mate, 40 for the other guy)

    A third each.

Council tax has nothing to do with how big your bedroom is.
  • Council tax is there to pay for council services, not to provide the space in your house. I think you should split equally. You all get the same bin collections, fire service, police, libraries, etc.
  • I agree with your comments however council tax does take into account property size and location, and if one person benefits more from that property size (private room instead of sharing), they should pay slightly more? Am I right?

No, council tax is based on property values in the early nineties.

Sorry, you'll just have to pay up!
  • Yes it's based on property prices (ie. Size and location etc). If one resident benefits more from that size by having their own room and more space, shouldn't they pay a bit more?

Just split it 3 ways, far simpler and the fairest way.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Who uses more space in the bin? Do any of you drive while others don't? Who has a library card?

You could come up with any number of ways to justify paying less. Don't go down that road, you'll just fall out over it.

If you feel that one of you gets more benefit from the house than the other two, the place where that should be reflected is the split of the rent, not the bills.
  • OK, thanks, i guess a third each then

There is an argument for paying different rent amounts for different size rooms, but not council tax which all goes to your local authority anyway.

Most councils you can change the DD from 10 months out of 12 to monthly. So if your bill is £1800 pa,your monthly DD will be £150, not £180.

I would pay four months each.
