My old stand by desktop gave up the ghost and I had to do a complete reinstall of the original WindowsXP 3. Everything has gone ok other than I can no longer get on to internet from Explorer. I have the Ethernet connection and the timer is showing in the tray at the bottom of the screen but when I try to go online Explorer says it is not possible. I have tried the connection wizard to install the internet but it does nothing. When I open the network connections it just shows the one network connection. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You are probably lacking ethernet drivers.
See if you have a CD of "motherboard drivers" hanging around.
You say Network Connections shows the one connection, but is that your ethernet?
Also go into Device Manager and see what it says for network adaptors, and whether there are any yellow triangles showing.
Mind you, some would say that it's no bad thing that you can't get on the internet with Windows XP...............

On device manager no yellow triangles, have downloaded latest driver for the Broadcom adaptor. You are probably lacking ethernet drivers.

The network connections just says local area network.Change is here to stay0 -
So Device Manager specifically has your Broadcom ethernet adaptor under Network adaptors, and it says "this device is working properly" and the driver is up to date?
In that case the Broadcom ethernet adaptor should show in Network adaptor settings in Control Panel, and you should be able to connect to your router with it at least.
I suppose it's possible there is a hardware problem with the ethernet connection that Device Manager isn't picking up? But if everything was working properly before the re-install, and you've checked the cable etc, then that doesn't seem likely.0 -

Yes it recognises it and says ok and it shows in network adaptor settings. The Ethernet cable is flashing showing input and the hour glass shows at the bottom of the screen in the tray. It just will not connect to Explorer at all.Change is here to stay0 -
Does it find the IP address automatically or have you got a set one?
Network settings - adaptor settings. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Tried both ways. Under their cmd setting I get results pinging the router and https://www.google.com. So must be connecting. Could it be there is a problem with Explorer, if so I can't update it with no internet access.Enterprise_1701C wrote: »Does it find the IP address automatically or have you got a set one?

If this is a new install of Windows XP you need to install IE8 before you'll be able to go anywhere on the internet.
http://filehippo.com/download_internet_explorer_xp/ is what you need. You can download this on another computer, copy it to a pen drive and then plug that to the XP machine and install it.0 -

tried this, still no difference. the local area connection is permanently connected and when I try to enable internet gateway it says connected then immediately goes back to disabled and enables local area again.Change is here to stay0
