Hi. We've had alot of problems with our DPF (diesel particle filter) on our 10 yr old diesel zafira. Eventually it has died and we need to get a new car. Issue is the type of family car we want e.g mpv or suv tend to all be diesels. I am scared to get a diesel now as have spent thousands on getting dpfs replaced twice and I don't think we do enough miles (5 to 10k p.a.) to warrant a diesel. But maybe modern diesels don't have dpf problems? Appreciate any thoughts/advice.

Buy a 1.8i petrol Zafira. Dirt cheap, and decent cars.

    What's your price range?

Other petrol suggestions apart from a Zafira might include:
    Citroen GRAND C4 PICASSO 1.8,
    Ford S-Max 2.0,
    Honda Stream 2.0 i-VTEC,
    Peugeot 5008 1.6 VTi ,
    MAZDA 5 1.8,
    Renault Grand Scenic 1.6 / 2.0,
    Toyota Verso 1.8,
    Toyota Prius+ MPV,

    Have a look on autotrader.
A Zafira, S-Max, or Mazda 5 would be a decent shortlist.

Yeah, getting a petrol would be the better choice. Diesels are more economic if you're doing a lot of milage, and 5000pa doesn't quite cover a lot of that :)

I have to ask - WHY?

I tow with it and a diesel just more relaxing to drive when towing.

No more changing down on the motorway inclines. The diesel just pulls and pulls.

Because i buy older cars the price gap between petrol and diesel versions is neglible.

    Late 2006 Mondeo Diesel.

At that age / price point and mileage i personally would have the 1.8i or 2.0i petrol variant. Theres a big risk with Mondeos around the price of replacement injectors and you're maybe in the realms of DPFs and DMFs there too.

BUT, as you say the diesel variant is better for towing and if you're otherwise happy and havent hit a big bill yet, then great.

Each to their own and all that.

Ford are putting Ecoboost engines in the people carriers so you get diesel like fuel economy but without the major downsides when running one on short journeys.
