Would you avoid diesel if only doing 5000 miles p.a
Hi. We've had alot of problems with our DPF (diesel particle filter) on our 10 yr old diesel zafira. Eventually it has died and we need to get a new car. Issue is the type of family car we want e.g mpv or suv tend to all be diesels. I am scared to get a diesel now as have spent thousands on getting dpfs replaced twice and I don't think we do enough miles (5 to 10k p.a.) to warrant a diesel. But maybe modern diesels don't have dpf problems? Appreciate any thoughts/advice.

Yes, definitely.0

Yes, unless you are doing 10 x 500 mile journeys.0

You've had DPF problems on a low mileage diesel.
Your usage isn't changing.
Diesels have got more complex and fragile, not less, in the intervening period.
I think you've answered your question, don't you?0 -
Thanks everyone. Really narrows down my choices in terms of a big family car ( I have 3 kids) as on autotrader 90% of the mpvs/suvs seem to be diesel but so be it!0

That still gives you 10% of the available vehicles to choose from, of course, and you only need one. But if that's not sufficient, then you may need to widen your preferences. No reason a big estate won't accommodate three kids.
But if, as you said in your first post, you're looking at a new car, then are the used choices relevant...?0 -
Not all older diesels have DPFs, particularly when you go older than say 2006.
If it's an MPV you're after then have a look at older Ford Galaxies/VW Sharans with the 1.9tdi engines.

As Adrian says, an estate is the answer. People with families seem to have been taken in by the marketing hype around MPVs, but an estate will offer as much space and be a nicer vehicle to drive. The sooner the whole cult of MPV/SUV/Chelsea tractor type vehicles disappears the better.0

I've been looking at some SUVs and for the above reasons I would not be touching this Nissan X-Trail with a bargepole. 2015 64 plate and the garage proudly states with a fanfare that it has done only 200 miles in that time. Repeats it in text so not an error IMO
