I am really hoping someone who has made cakes, makes cakes has taken a picture of their nappy cake from the back. If they have I would be really grateful if they could post a picture of what it looks like. I keep trying to make this one cake but am just not sure how to get the blanket to stick together and how it should look. Any help/advice would be great.

    Thanks
Sorry, I dont have any photo's, but I just overlap the edges of the blanket and secure with 2 or 3 safety pins.

    Hi love2shopforbargains,

No photos of backs of cakes am afraid but I do blankets different ways.

Some, I fold so they just meet at the back. I hold with a big safety pin then put 3 lots of stitching top middle and bottom , then remove pin.
The ones with a point at front or hood, I overlap at the back, pin till I get the ribbon on then remove pin.
Then I overlap some blankets at the front (sideways) and tie a bow where it overlaps.

    Hi vikki_louise

For “swirled” nappies, I find it best to make them in a straight sided round dish of some sort. I use a plastic cake box.
Place the nappies around the inside edge, as many as you want. I roll 2 nappies together to put in the middle (I remove later as I put stuff in middle of cake instead) just to hold it all together.
Put elastic over the whole “round” (tricky bit!). If you can’t get it over very well, just do it so it holds nappies and then turn the whole thing out upside down and put elastic in right place. You can then rearrange and neaten nappies at this stage. Also, pick which end looks best to have on show.
Build up other tiers in same way.

I have gone back to rolling nappies in my cakes as I didn’t like the way that the top tier on “swirled” ones always looked too small and out of proportion.

    Hope it helps!

Forgot to say vikki, when you put nappies in container, overlap themabout an inch or so, with the folded edge on outside. You can space them out more (for less nappies) or put them closer together later.
  • Thanks to CandyB101 and moonpenny, also clicked the thanks button too.

    Thanks again

love2shopforbargains- when i use muslin for the base i will try and explain what i do - iron muslin and put in paper leave both ends at 90degree , tuck one into the rolled nappies and pull tight then use the shirt clip or if you have ran out like me use a safety pin fasten from underneath, hope that helps

First go at a nappy cake

    2d9ec01.jpg

    20 nappies
    baby towel
    one vest
    2 bibs
    baby comb and brush
    baby bottle
    teddy

Second go after deciding I didnt like the first one

    20r4jgw.jpg

    baby fleece blanket
    baby hooded towel
    baby comb and brush
    nail clippers
    dummy
    27 nappies
    3 vests
    2 bibs
    teddy

It still needs ribbons, and maybe sock roses, what do you think? Does it look ok? Would you add more stuff like a bottle and toiletries or would you leave it at that now? Like I say it's my first go and I want it to be right. xx

Lovely cakes ikkle87, loving the 1 tier. Can't believe it is your first attempt (thank god I don't have a piccie of my 1st one) :rotfl:

When you are folding the blanket (triangle), fold the back one a little lower down than the front, then it won't show and look a little neater.
Also with the vest, maybe fold it a little narrower (exact height of the nappies) then pin each sleeve to the nappies, I do this and it holds it much flatter and very secure.

Don't be put off, have another go and I am sure you will succeed :D
