Hester please beg your DD not to agree to this ludicrous plan. I speak from experience - when I was a teenager we had my father's mother living with us; as she got more "out of it" and also physically frailer, it got harder and harder to cope with her. I have awful memories of my mother and I having to carry her bodily between us, with her sat on a chair and us lifting the chair, one either side, from her room, all the way down the corridor to the loo, and of course back again, on a regular basis. Plus she would soil herself amazingly often.
And what about when she does something dangerous and maybe causes harm to herself or someone else through her dementia - I bet there'll be recriminations flying about like nobody's business, and it'll be "all DD's fault".
Honestly, your DD will likely wind up ill in very short order if she takes this on.
The "men" (and I use the term loosely, sorry) are being grossly unfair on all concerned, including Granny herself.
Sorry, I'm not usually so outspoken, but this just takes the biscuit.:(

    Afternoon

Well thats it ...its all over and Dad has gone to where ever people go ...hope its a lovely real ale pub with fantastic food and constant jazz music so he can indulge all his favourite hobbies :)

The day went as well as I had hoped it would if not a little better. The ceremony was a horror for me which I saw mostly through tears. I did somehow manage to get through the poem though until of course the last 2 lines (you were spot on Specky)

Once that bit was over and we headed to the pub then it became more of a celebration with everyone sharing their person memories of him which was great ...so much I didn't know about my darling dad :rotfl: The food was lovely and would have fed 3 or 4 times the numbers so everyone went home with a doggy box :)

Today I am starting to crack on with mums financial stuff ....currently have been on hold to the council tax people for just coming up to an hour ....ridiculous its going to be a long day if this is the norm.

I think the hard work for me is really just starting with dealing with mum. She is painfully thin now (despite my lunchtime efforts) and wont go out the house unless I pick her up and its a good half an hour for me to get there without any traffic so obviously not so easy to nip in. Lots to think about and work on. Course number one son has gone back to France now in a blaze of mum adoration and left me too it (lol not bitter at all honest :o)

HH ...after seeing the effort of care the nurses put in with Dad whilst he was ill I would looking for a nought on the figure to make it worthwhile and even then I imagine it would be sole destroying.

Today i have to cook a chicken I had got for the prodigal son and wife today as we never got round to that meal and its use by today. Got some nice coleslaw and spuds to go with it and I will freeze the rest. Really hoping to get back to using stuff up in the freezer soon instead of just shoving stuff in:cool:

Thanks again for all your lovely vibes yesterday and today its meant so much :A Take care all and enjoy your Friday if you can

    Hello
Had a busy day yesterday and didn't get home till 5pm to find broadband playing up. So back to square one and S*y called again. Now awaiting a new router and phone company doing a 48hr line test. We were supposed to be going to watch DGS in a football tournament tomorrow, but as DH will have to stay for router delivery, I will go with DD to keep her company.
Did go to DD's to meet Rafa pup "in person " . He was so cute, but a bit bonkers, when he was awake that is.
Thanks to everyone for their OS ways to combat my coughing. I tried a hot toddy and the lemon and honey combo but it seems that I have allergic rhinitis, probably from the shredding of Dads hedge cuttings, so back to the antihistamines and nasal spray :(.
Hester how very dare they take advantage of your DD. She already has her hands full looking after the children and the housework.. Will they pull their weight with the caring too ?
Well enough waffling, must get back to the ironing mountain ( must I really ? )
Enjoy the rest of the day everybody.

Jackie - I've a similair relationship with my gran. My mum tends to be a bit...erratic when it comes to any problems in my life. Obviously my gran has 83 years experience on this planet and with that comes some sound advice she can pass on so I do find I open up to her more than my mum. Plus she always has a wide selection of homemade cakes or sweets that she likes to shove down my throat!

Nelski, I'm glad things went well and you managed to get through (most) of your poem.

Speky no matter how old you get your Granny will always thinkof you as a little boys and feed you cakes and biscuits, she sounds like a fantastic lady, one after my own heart :):):) I tend to see the boys as mobile feeding bins ,and they never disappoint me :):):) Like string beans, yet have hollow legs, bit like I was 60+ years ago, my how life and the years change you :):):)

Nels I'm glad all went off OK now take some time to pamper yourself if you can, just stop and ,,,breathe and spend the weekend relaxing if possible ,no housework, cooking or stressing, large G&T and feet up for a day or two

Nelski I'm certain you did your Dad proud; I love the idea of him supping Real Ale and listening to jazz music - maybe he's found the corner of the Summerlands with our pal C, who departed this life 10 years ago come October. C was the chap who basically brought Mr LW and myself together. :o I reckon they'd get on like a house on fire!

Nelski, so glad the day went smoothly, nice that so many people could remember happy times with your dad.

Speky......so glad that you have such a lovely relationship with your Granny....both of mine died in their early 40s, long before I was born, so am quite jealous of you and JackieOs grandchildren.....its also why I am so involved in the!lives of my 9 grandchildren......love them to bits.

It has been a really nice day here, cloudy with sunny spells, nice and warm......took DD4s 3 girls for a walk, short as I find the triple buggy very heavy to push, especially when laden with 36kg of 3 small girls!

Hester.....please try to dissuade your DD from taking on the care of her grandmother.........for any money! The care of a person with dementia is a job for professionals, in an environment capable of dealing with the problems attached to dementia. Try to ensure that she is not "guilted" into it, she has no responsibility where her grandmother is concerned.

Had a lovely phone call from Australia this morning....DD3 and family are coming back to Irelandtoive in September or October, so pleased, they will stay here untilsettled, so need to do a huge declutter or we will be down to giving them the chook shed!

Enjoy your weekend.....bank holiday here on Monday.

Nelski so glad your day went as well as could be and your dad had a good send off. Now remember to take care of yourself and allow yourself to grieve as and when you need :A xx

Hester I've shared my thoughts on the situation with your DD and her grandmothers care on the garden fence thread...I do hope she takes heed of the many who have expressed horror at the idea. x

Speky All I can do is concur with others that you are a fine young man, you are a credit to yourself :) x

    To All,

Hope you are all fairing and keeping well.

Nothing much to say for myself this week but I'm plodding along, as you do ;)

Enjoy your weekend all and take care x
