Turkish Airlines - Turkey regulations equal to EU

Hi everyone,

I thought I would post this here as I'm not sure how many people are aware of this, and it is currently just noted in my slightly obscurer thread.

On Turkish Airlines' website there are some documents relating to compensation that I found whilst considering my eligibility. This is particularly of relevance for people who are delayed flying out of Turkey, which is not covered by the EU regulations.

Of particular interest is this document: http://www.turkishairlines.com/download/shy_passenger.pdf
(edit: I can't seem to download this at the moment due to website maintenance... hopefully will be back up soon).

It basically seems to state that, from 2012, EU regulations also apply to Turkish based airlines flying out of Turkey.

This should be very helpful for people who don't think they're covered for connecting flights at Istanbul.

I have successfully claimed 600 euros for my flight, Birmingham to Kenya, which had the second leg from Istanbul to Nairobi cancelled. As this leg is non-EU to non-EU then I thought I wasn't covered until I showed them this document.

Thank you maralions. You appear to have got the investigative bug for flight delays. ;)
Presumably this is in anticipiation of Turkey joining the EU at some point?

    Hi Pingu,

Your claim may be right on the cusp of the EU regulations, maybe.

Firstly Turkey is not an EU member state, although the following link to a previous post suggest you may be covered.

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=72621322&postcount=17

Further, it is debatable whether the regs cover delays which are entirely incurred outside the EU. There is no case law on this at present but a case is pending which may bring some clarity in the near future.

As things stand I would say put in a claim to Turkish Airlines, they may surprise us and agree with you. If they turn your claim down I would wait for the pending case and see if that enlightens us.

    Good luck.
