E.ON still installing SMETS1 meters
Comments
-
So today I have received the following email from Eon (who I only swapped to last month)
We're phasing out our customers' old meters and replacing them for free, with new self-reading smart meters.
Why are we changing your meter?
We need to install smart meters in our customer's homes as part of a nationwide upgrade programme. Plus they have great benefits:
✓ See how much energy you use and what it costs with a free in-home display.
✓ No more estimated bills*.
✓ No need to provide meter readings, they're sent to us automatically.
Click here to book your meter exchange appointment.
Yours sincerely
E.ON Smart Meter Team
P.S. Occasionally we may be unable to fit a smart meter for you. We'll check these details with you when you make your appointment online.
*If you change tariff or there is a price change, part of your bill may be estimated until we get a reading for your new tariff or price.
I do not want a smart meter at the moment but looking at the posts above it appears they need a mobile signal. Is this correct? If so we don't have a mobile signal so I should be safe:D0 -
i have contacted Eon with regards to this communication and opted out of receiving further communication, which they were happy to do so.0

I had British Gas smart meters fitted eight days ago. They still appear to be first generation and at first appeard to be of use. However after a few days of the monitor switched off this now appears to be inacurate on pay as you go.Its using a mobile signal also insted of a supposed dedicated network
Much of the readings I cannot understand on the monitor. The top ups take around half an hour to appear. The electricity meter display in not lit and hard to read and sometimes understand where the previous Itron key meter had a lit understandable display. The landis&Gyr model british gas is installing can work in credit mode also which it appears more suited.Even though many pay by credit they need to realise that these meters are capable of prepayment mode also any dispute in payment could lead to the meter being switched to prepay.
Now not being able to use the erratic indoor display I am back to square one having to note the amounts on the meter before topping up.Once you have found that the electric kettle and the vacuum clearner use a lot of electricity simply telling you each time is pointless information.
I dont recommend these meters everything is going back to the supplier if its anything like the indoor display that could be anything accurate or not.

Thank you.
Your post was the final straw for me - just cancelled an EDF smart meter installation due next week.
Having done quite a bit of research, I note that Which are advising that "If your energy supplier wants to install a smart meter in your home now (before it's installing second-generation smart meters), you don't have to accept one".
I'm holding out for a SMETS2 meter.0 -

Smart meters don't currently run on a dedicated communications network to the outside world, but do run on a local network for communication between the assets in the property.
The IHD can turn off if the signal is lost, check your electric meter, there will be another white device installed next to it, if the WAN light is red, then it needs a signal, but as you haven't mentioned manually topping up, then I guess its green or flashing green.

The left side of the monitor tells you your hourly estimate cost if the usage remains unchanged for 60 minutes, Electric changes every 15 seconds, Gas changes every 30 minutes. Top ups can take up to an hour before they appear, ( you can manually add the vend/topup code, if you want the credit sooner. If you want the electric meter to light up, then press the green square, and continue to press the green square until you get the desired infomation. As far as the meters being switched remotely to prepay, I have not yet encountered this, we still need to physically exchange meters to switch between the payment types, Although we do now use one meter for both credit and pp

If the inhome display appears erratic to you, then contact BG and have someone come and explain it to you correctly. The second button from right will cycle through different displays until you get to the 'prepay' screen where it will tell you your infomation.

I dont know why I bothered to explain any of this, You also appear to be an anti-smart meter enthusiast just like the OP0 -
I am not for or against them its the usefulness after you know that the cleaner and the kettle sends the largest usage. It might help identify a faulty appliance for example.
The Landis&Gyr smart gas meter is a concern having had the prepayment version of this it did fail after two years mine and others of the same age had to be removed locally because of battery problems.Much like the prepayment model the smart version has a similar hold red button which cantains more useful information to cycle through but nowhere is this mentioned. But this can help to run down the battery over time especially in cold weather usage.
If the SMETS1 gas meter goes down does that mean the V1 electricity meter needs to be replaced also?
The information is only useful to what someone understands.much of it is of little use to many people anyway.more use would be for these meters to work between suppliers its hard to see a monitor branded British Gas working with SSE the keys/cards didn't but this is supposed to addressed at a later date.
I'am quite happy with British Gas on prepay their the same or near to other suppliers on price.
MILLIONS OF SMART METERS MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED
Six million smart electricity and gas meters installed in homes since 2012 may have to be replaced to make them work with a new communications network which was switched on in November but is still not being used

Hate to break it to you, but to date, every smart meter fitted will HAVE to be replaced...
And so will every smart meter fitted between now and 2023
Please provide a source for this information as I've never read that, unless you are just saying that everything in life breaks eventually in which case you are missing the point.
I am actually massively in favour of smart meters, and I want one soon, hence I did the research (and provided links to my claims). But I am not going to take one that will become defunct when I move supplier (which I do, like most people on here, the moment my fixed tariff ends), when a second generation one will solve that in just a few months.0 -
Which states that suppliers are allowed to deploy SMETS1 smart meters for 1 year after the DCC went live. I can't find an exact date for that but from the official DCC web site it looks like that was some time in November 2016. https://www.smartdcc.co.uk/implementation/programme/
It sounds like they had no choice because there is only SMETS1 meters are available .Looking at Landis&Gyr's website theres no mention of of the new version. The problem also is peoples IGT ground boxes have been modified for this type of gas meter too. Here are the British Gas type.

Messaging- The meter is capable of showing messages from the utility on the meter display.
Companies should inform their customers that meters are not nterchangeable with this "upgrade".Having an other onsite visit to exchange meters costs money. That comes from customers' bills.Gaz & Leccy should have shown a bit of savvy.0
