E.ON still installing SMETS1 meters
I couldn't find an answer to this online so tweeted E.ON Help yesterday. Hopefully putting it here will help others find it.
According to E.ON Help, as you can see in the tweet reply, they are still deploying SMETS1 smart meters.
https://twitter.com/EONhelp/status/869519866943983616
These are the old smart meter types that may not be compatible with other energy providers should you wish to move supplier. The new smart meter type, SMETS2, will use the central government backed 'DCC' network for communicating, which will allow all suppliers to automatically pick up readings from any SMETS2 smart meter. See this Which article for confirmation and more info. http://www.which.co.uk/reviews/smart-meters/article/smart-meters-explained/smart-meter-roll-out.
Which states that suppliers are allowed to deploy SMETS1 smart meters for 1 year after the DCC went live. I can't find an exact date for that but from the official DCC web site it looks like that was some time in November 2016. https://www.smartdcc.co.uk/implementation/programme/
Hope this helps someone. The information is correct to the best of my ability. Happy for someone to correct or add more info.

Oh,are you suggesting all those who have had smart meters installed to date will find they won't work in smart mode if they ever switch supplier?
I think there should be a lot more about this, if true
Who needs smart meters anyway? We all survived withgout them until now.
Iirc, they were only introduced because of a Brussels mandate, and thanks to us all voting Brexit, we'll be out of that by March 2019
Perhaps we could then put the £billions it's going to cost towards something useful like our NHS, or police?0 -
Morning [MaccA]
That's right we are still fitting SMETS1 at the moment.
We’re looking to start using SMETS2 later this year.
But I'm sorry we don't have much further information about it for now.
Thank you

Eon couldn't fit a smart meter at my last property due to a poor mobile phone signal.
I moved into a new property two months ago and Eon have been today to fit a smart meter. Again it has failed due to a poor mobile signal.
Talking to the fitter, he says 25% of the installations are failing.
As he spent more than two hours with me, this must be costing Eon (and therefore its customers) a fortune.
I wonder if the Smets2 meters will be any better."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

It's unlikely that Smets2 meters will be any different to Smets1 meters, apart from running new software.0 -

...not quite true as far as I'm aware.......SMETS2 meters will be able to operate as part of a local network..so won't be dependent on establishing their own mobile connection "back to base" - they SHOULD work as long as some meter(s) in the locality have a connection to the DCC.0 -

If they are using zigbee to achieve that, then SMETS1 meters may still be up-gradable as that is the wireless network used for communicating between the meter and the in house display.
You could be reliant on lots of people having the meters fitted before yours will work and a lot of those people could be in the same boat.0 -

I agree.......so I won't be an early adopter of SMETS2 either:rotfl:0 -
Getting almost daily phone calls and letters now from EON, pestering me to get a smart meter.
Are we any closer to SMETS2 yet?0
