Like many others I have switched through CEC and my meters were "Smart"

Reading them manually with my new supplier is not an issue - no more effort than pressing a button or two.

I think most people on the Forum think that the Smart meter programme is at least badly thought out.

Whoever was in charge of creating the standards needs a slap.

Smart meters that stop working the moment you switch? Yeah, that's conducive to a competitive industry. Thanks Obama, Er Trump, er May, whatever.

They don t stop working the moment you switch of course.Absolute doddle to press a button and get to " total kwh " for the electric meter reading and M3 ( cubic metres ) on the gas meters..No different from standard non smart meters Two minutes of googling would have provided you with that info and there is no need to come on a forum and look for advice.A meter is a meter and the meter installed will continue to operate in its primary duty to measure the consumption of gas/electric.. It has lost the remote reading function, that is all.. If you return to the supplier who fitted it, it will regain that function.
Ed Milliband was minister for energy in the Labour government who presided over the smart meter roll out, making them mandatory.. Tory goverment just relaxed the mandatory order and would not take action against people who refused one.
Meter fitters are having trouble fitting many electric/gas (smart or dumb ) meters because the homeowners/occupiers make the installations very difficult with many obstacles in the way which they refuse to move.Gas meters in modern fitted kitchens in the corners cannot be accessed without some dismantling and many people think it is up to the supplier to organise this.. This is a problem which will not go away. Meter Fitters simply walk away from these jobs because they have no other option

    Anyway, read my other posts.

I know what happens to Smart Meters post switch as I have one. If you read my other posts in this thread I have addressed this.

That doesn't take away the fact that the Smart Meter standards were not designed with switching in mind was a monumentally stupid one, regardless of who was in govt. at the time. These standards are generally created by wonks, not politicians and frankly, someone didn't do their job properly.

I think they hoped that a software upgrade for METS1 meters would allow them to be upgraded to be METS2. Which as far as I can tell, hasn't been ruled out as they were supposed to be starting consultation on it soon.

    We can only hope!

Although, if the standards for both METS 1 and 2 are known, surely it shouldn't need a consultation to see if they can be upgraded?

Something in this whole thing makes me think someone involved shouldn't be allowed to organise festivities at alcohol creation facilities.
