Slough

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.

Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.

And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears:

And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.

But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.

It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead

And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.

In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.
Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.

Quite appropriate for the times really. Verses 3 &4.

Hey I lived in slough. As with many other places it has good and bad areas but many many people have moved to slough because of there being excellent schools within the area. Castleview primary school is within the top 250 schools in the country and we are lucky to have 5 GRAMMAR schools.

I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to find that in many other areas of the country including probably where you live :p:p

If I had little kids I'd rather send them to one of the other 249 schools than live in Slough. It is grim. I worked there for 18 years.

now stating "within the top 10 schools", i'd give you a pat on the back, but in the top 250, hardly great now is it?? lol

oh and my area had about 8 grammar schools, and numerous private schools, yet it doesn't make "croydon" something to boast about either! lol

@ Dolce - it's hardly a garage now though is it?

it's probably bigger than a lot of the new build "townhouses" now too.

granted it does look mankey though! lol

Well, not any more, granted.

perhaps I should have said "recently converted luxury coach house"

get your facts straight. I wasn't boasting, merely pointing out that slough isn't as awful as people think.
Regarding your point about primary schools : Considering there are over 18,000 primary schools in the country, reaching the top 250 is a great achievement.

and lastly!....Oh yes and your right about croydon... hardly a place to boast about!

Blimey - you're all lucky! Basingstoke doesn't have a single Grammar - I had to travel 50 miles to school on the train every day
