    I can tell you why it's so tall; when they dug a hole for it, they met the house foundations. It's probably not very stable. Doesn't mean it's a problem.

    Cutting would, I agree, be beset by problems of dust, sparks, and a messy finish to the pole.
    Grow up from the bottom, something nice and scented. A simple jasmine would do me. All that evening scent.
