We have a summer house in Falmouth and we do spend a fair amount of time there throughout the year, strangly we are here now.
My thoughts are
£200,000 is low in Falmouth for a 3 bed, you will find somewhere but it will likely be in land, mid terraces, away from the train stations and up hill. So bare that in mind. It is hilly away from the docks with lots of steps to walk down to town. Maybe an issue for you if you are with disabilities.
There are two train stations next to each other docks and town. The trains are slow and really to go abywhere you need to go back to Truro and on from there on the large trains.
Students have never been an issue for us, to be honest they really aren't noticeable.
A lot of the residents are 30s and 40s with youngish children, encouraged by the sailing.
Retirees are being encouraged to come at the moment, a flat block has just been completed and another is just startling.
It's quite a wealthy place, there has been a fair amount of money spent here in the past years.
Lots to do in the community if you wish to, there has just been a small music festival in the town this weekend and another is coming in a few weeks.
A lot of the hotels also house events and courses, you can pay to swim in some hotels.
Falmouth population is higher than Truro.0 -
MSE ignorance at it's best.
It used to be a college of Arts as a college of Arts it was available for local people to study Arts. Now it offers silly courses like fashion about 200 miles from any centres of fashion. That is like offering ice skating lessons in the Sahara desert. I can't wait until they close it and turn it back into a college of Art for local people. You only need a technical college for business courses in tourism not a university. That university cons young unintelligent people from all over the country to pay for its nothing courses and the salaries of the people who work there. You really don't need to go to university to get a job working selling clothes in a supermarket.0 -
Don't go to Falmouth. When that dreadful university finally closes there may not be anything there. Please will someone close it soon it is conning the least able of our young people out of a lot of money and 3 years of their lives on nothing courses.
I can't wait for it to close and turn into something that benefits the local economy instead of sucking money out of unintelligent young people from the rest of the UK. You would only go there if you couldn't get into anywhere else.0 -
Interesting... so she escaped..lol. On the last point I think that's one thing that is in my mind about Cornwall.. I'm sure the people are generally friendly like anywhere else... but I imagine it is hard to match the openness of the people of parts of the country I'm more familiar with. I certainly see comments about the Cornish being a bit more resistant than average to outsiders... but I'm confident our social skills will give them cause to become even more so haha.seashore22 wrote: »My daughter went to Falmouth (take note Cakeguts) and although she loved the course, she thought Falmouth was in a bit of a bubble and was very happy to come home after 3 years. She went to the art college and stayed in the town rather than on campus, so she did have a real experience of what life was like there. It's one of those places that is lovely to visit, but I probably wouldn't want to live there.
We have family who moved to Cornwall who seem happy enough, but found it a bit of a struggle to integrate."Do not attribute to conspiracy what can adequately be explained by incompetence" - rogerblack0 -
Oh nice... hope weather is better than here! Each and all of your points duly noted and make sense. Thanks very much.lush_walrus wrote: »We have a summer house in Falmouth and we do spend a fair amount of time there throughout the year, strangly we are here now.

They still do excellent arts courses. My daughter studied illustration there a few years ago and it is one of the best, if not the best, in the country. She has since had a book published by a New York publisher and I consider that a success.0

Don't forget how much it costs for water down there. Southwest water charge for every drop you use0
-
Yeah water rates... notably higher than here... we're metered and fortunately pretty low and consistent users.... but it'll still be a three figure increase if memory of my calcs is right. Council tax a bit of a hike too I expect due to band change and 'less help' if our circumstances remain similar. Otherwise I'm expecting costs to generally be similar... hopefully the loss of solar system (assuming new place doesn't have) will be partly offset by warmer winters..lol. I'll have to make sure the local pub has reasonable beer prices... that could be quite influential.. every pint used!Rosieandjim wrote: »Don't forget how much it costs for water down there. Actually there are also courses run there by Exeter uni and there is the Camborne School of mining based there so not all arty farty courses. It attracts a number of overseas students too not all from the EU - who are paying a lot of money to attend.0
