I was looking for something at my mums the other week and spotted an old tube of germolene.
and I remembered how much I loved it and how useful it was for everything! Mum always had a tube of germolene and tube of savlon. :0)
so I thought I'd get some ... and it's changed! no longer that slightly shiny goo, but a fluffy cream. :0(
when did it change? !!!! and is there anything like the original germolene any more?

How long ago are you talking? The Germolene I have now for my kids is the same as the stuff we had when I was little (25+ years ago).0

I love the smell of germolene! It used to come in a little round tin when I was a child. Not sure when it changed.
But TCP was the medicine of choice for my Mum. We were always going to school smelling of TCP :rotfl:Don't know if you can still get that now!Mortgage and debt free0 -

germolene is white rather than pink now but you still get that germolene smell - although I don't think it's as strong.0

For sometime you could get both ointment, (pink sticky stuff like the original in the tin) and cream (white and fluffy not as effective.)
Recently I have only found the cream, don't know what, if anything, has happened to the ointment.
Now, what I want to know is, what has happened to Savlon Dry Spray?
It was the best thing ever for burns. I always kept one in the kitchen and a quick spray on any burn you might get ensured that not only did it stop the stinging almost immediately, but there was no blister afterwards.
I used my last one up sometime ago and have found it impossible to replace. Our local pharmacist said that they were always being asked for it but it wasn't being made any more. She thought it might be because it contained iodine.????
Is iodine now a banned substance?
I did find it being offered on eBay for some extortionate price and even, momentarily, was tempted.
Does anyone know what happened there.

Ah the smell of the pink Germolene takes me back to my childhood, in a small tin sitting on the shelf along with a pair of sharp scissors some gauze bandage, and a bottle of witch hazel for bruises, was a cure all from my Mum along with a quick cuddle and if I was lucky and brave and didn't fuss when I fell over a rock cake .Because my late Dad was a chemist all the children in our road were sent down to Mrs B's to get their cuts, grazes and bumps looked at.
Mum treated all the children who had fallen over the same, dab of stuff on a grazed knee with a cake and cuddle and 'off you go and be more careful next time':):)

oh yes ... I was looking for savlon dry spray a few months ago at the chemist because DS had fallen over and had a HUGE very slight graze on his thigh ... one of those that doesn't need a plaster, but just needed something to help it heal /scab over. Local chemist said they couldn't get it any more, and it was a shame, because they were always being asked for it!
I use tcp for all sorts of things!
I'm glad its not just me who has found the germolene cream not as good! the cream seems to just rub off, where as the sticky ointment seemed to 'cling on' ! and it definitely doesn't smell as strong! what was it that made it 'sticky' ?
( I used to say that rootbeer tastes likes gemolene smells ... and it doesn't now! )0 -

it would have been 35 plus years ago that I used it as a child, but I had a tube of the original ointment a few ( probably 10 !!! ) years ago. but the tube has changed now to more like a toothpaste plastic tube!0 -
I used to love the smell of the pink Germolene ointment in a tin - Deep Heat's the same and I love that too
I'm not *that* old (ahem ...) but I definitely remember it from my childhood. It was very thick and greasy and stayed put for ages. OH always laughs at me as our medicine box is full of 'old fashioned' remedies like TCP, arnica ointment for bruises and Snowfire ointment for cracked skin. In fact, the only 'old-fashioned' remedy I draw the line at is kaolin and morphine mixture, of which I have horrible memories from childhood ...
