Thank you very much, Soolin. PayPal won't allow me to remove my debit cards. although they have opened a case, they still have not taken the £250 credit that I have with them.
I am thinking of getting a legal adviser. do you know any firm that is good and prices reasonable?
Ask locally for recommendations and make sure you ask whoever you contact if this is their area of speciality. Paypal and financial litigation generally is a specialist area so you will need to find someone who understands.
