Updated 27/05/2017 01.23 PM (UK time)
Summary
We have experienced a major IT system failure that is causing very severe disruption to our flight operations worldwide.
The terminals at London Heathrow and Gatwick have become extremely congested and we have cancelled all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick before 6pm UK time today, so please do not come to the airports.
We are currently also unable to assist with rebooking through ba.com or our contact centres.
More Information
We will provide more information on ba.com, Twitter and through airport communication channels as soon as we can for flights due to depart after that time. We will be updating the situation via the media regularly throughout the day.
We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience this is causing our customers and we are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

Latest update is that there will be no BA flights today (27 May) from Heathrow nor Gatwick.UPDATE 1645 BST -- Following the major IT system failure experienced earlier today, with regret we have had to cancel all flights leaving from Heathrow and Gatwick for the rest of today, Saturday, May 27.
We are working hard to get our customers who were due to fly today onto the next available flights over the course of the rest of the weekend. Those unable to fly will be offered a full refund.
The system outage has also affected our call centres and our website but we will update customers as soon as we are able to.
Most long-haul flights due to land in London tomorrow (Sunday, May 28) are expected to arrive as normal, and we are working to restore our services from tomorrow, although some delays and disruption may continue into Sunday.
We will continue to provide information on ba.com, Twitter and through airport communication channels.
We will be updating the situation via the media regularly throughout the day.

Would eu 261 apply? If so that's a lot of money lost for BA0

That's surely pure speculation at this time, also, unsurprisingly, pushed by the GMB union! If you have proof, please post it.
There have also been, unsurprisingly, comments made that this is a cyber-attack, although that has been denied by BA.
Personally I'll just wait to find out what the facts are, before speculating, or placing any blame.

I agree that we have to wait to see what the problem has been caused by.
However, it is hard to think how BA can argue the problem was out of it's control. Whether run by the Indians or not the systems are under BA's control and they should be ensuring resilience with suitable back up systems.
If it turns out to be a cyber attack then it would be BA's responsibility to ensure it's system has appropriate defences and again a backup plan.
I forecast a lot of compensation will be paid out.......0 -

Major IT system failure
Latest information at 23.30 Saturday May 27
Following the major IT system failure experienced throughout Saturday, we are continuing to work hard to fully restore all of our global IT systems.
Flights on Saturday May 27
We are extremely sorry for the significant levels of disruption caused to customers and understand how frustrating their experiences have been.
Affected customers can claim a full refund or rebook to a future date for travel up until the end of November 2017.
Customers are urged to keep any food, transport or accommodation receipts and can make a claim in due course through our Customer Relations teams.
There are a significant number of bags at Heathrow which we will be reuniting with customers via couriers as soon as we can. This will be done free of charge.
Please don't come to Heathrow to collect your delayed bags, as they are in the process of being sorted for onward distribution in secure airside locations.
Flights on Sunday May 28
Although some of the IT systems have returned, there will be some knock-on disruption to our schedules as aircraft and crews are out of position around the world.
We are repositioning some aircraft during the night to enable us to operate as much of our schedule as possible throughout Sunday.
At this stage we are aiming to operate a near normal schedule of flights from Gatwick and the majority of our Heathrow services.
Please do not come to the airports unless you have a confirmed booking for travel.
We recognise the uncertainty that some customers may be feeling and have therefore extended our flexible booking policy.
If you are due to fly to/from Heathrow or Gatwick on Sunday May 28 or Monday May 29 and no longer wish to travel, even if your flight is still operating, you can rebook to travel up to and including 10 June. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0 -
Did they properly inform the passengers? If not they at least could have communicated via tannoys and information screens. I saw shots on Breakfast of crowds of people without a clue as to what was going on. People were sleeping on towels in the airports. Hotels were raking it in with inflated prices. When the cafes etc were closed no food or drinks were handed out. It isn't rocket science to be able to organise some kind of backup plan. Is it beyond the realms of human intelligence for airlines or airports to at least have a stockpile of single mattresses stored away for emergencies such as this. Personally I think the situation was handled amateurishly and I would be absolutely disgusted if I was a BA passenger. You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

All seems generally with BA Cityflyer, who don't fly from Gatwick and Heathrow.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0
