No way to compare economy 10 prices?

None of the comparison sites seem to allow me to compare economy 10. Even the savings club only let's me do economy 7.

Currently we are on a tariff from SSE southern and it's not labelled what tariff on the bill it does refer to it as evergreen. Our next year's projection is predicted £1096 and they are upping our DD to £100 a month which we cannot afford. It was previously £83 and we only owe £63. We dont have a gas supply at all. We are in a small 2 bed flat, family of 4 (2 under 4).

I'm trying to find places I can get these prices down but I've no idea how! Any advice would be appreciated. I can answer questions though I am not particularly saavy on all the jargon used in some of the posts I've looked at.

Thank you in advance.

Economy 10 is not supported by that many suppliers. You would be wise to consider the cost/benefits of changing your meters:

What sort of heating have you got?
E10 gives you a boost in the afternoons and evenings so although you might find E7 cheaper for your consumption you also might find that E7 wont give you enough heat so you'd need to use supplementary heating on the peak rate during those times

It's still worth investigating though - you should know what your peak and off peak splits are - just put those into a comparison site for E7 and see how much it would cost.

We had economy 7 and didn't really work for us as we can't put our washing on in the early hours as it's too noisy - we have people above, below and either side. We switched to economy 10 and for the most part it's ok and we try to do the washing, have baths etc during the cheaper times in the day. We were paying £95 and then they reevaluated and said £83 and now they've upped it to £100! I don't know how to find out who's cheaper. I've looked at eon but I can't get a quote on economy 10 even though they do offer it. We won't be changing to 7 as I'm in most days so those extra hours of off peak make a difference.

Many suppliers will take on E10 meters, some will even charge at E7 rates and you still have the benefit of the afternoon boost. A good place to start with your information gathering https://economy10.com/2017/05/18/cheapest-economy-10-prices-may17/

Try going on the comparison sites and see how the figures come out if you state you have a standard meter and put you cobsumption as the total of both rates.

Perhaps not the best source of information, an anonymous blogger?

The issue with tariffs such as E10 is that one supplier's E10 is not the same as another. e.g. sometimes it invoves 2xMPANs whilst sometimes it is simply 10 hours (usually split over 3 periods) of cheap electricity.

The meters used have an MPAN that would quickly indicate it is a meter reserved for a specific DNO only

Perhaps a better source of information would come from this MSE article
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/economy-7#economy10
Of the big six suppliers, only EDF, Npower and SSE have customers on specific Economy 10 tariffs. Even then, they don't usually promote the tariff to new customers.
My advice; do not attempt to switch supplier with the existing metering.
Attempts by others top do so have invariably ended in tears.

As the MSE article also says
If the results show you're overpaying in a big way, consider switching to a normal meter.

Hello mrshtobe and, yes, we do offer an Economy 10 tariff. It’s not, though, available through our website or the independent comparison sites and you’ll need to speak to us for a quote.

Economy 10 meters are mainly designed for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. As such, we’ve only the one tariff available. Prices differ depending on the region you’re in. If you let me have the first part of your post code, I’ll be happy to tell you our Economy 10 prices for your area.

As footyguy says, Economy 10 meters are either 2 or 3 rate. With the latest 2 rates, all electricity used during the 10 off peak hours is charged at the cheaper prices. This isn’t the same with the older 3 rates. Here, only the 5 hours at night covers all usage. The remaining 5 hours of off peak electricity (in the afternoon and evening) is for heating and hot water coming through the dedicated Economy 10 circuits only.

    Hope this helps mrshtobe.

  • Hi I realise this is an old thread but the content is still relevant, I have just signed up to switch from a single tariff meter to an eco10 meter through EON but they did not tell me my new tariff, would it be possible for you to give me that informtaion. Also will the person fitting the meter need to alter any of the house electrics by for instance installing another circut to handle the off peak times?
