Almost 8 years ago I bought an HP Photosmart C5380, a 5-cart printer that is still going well. I registered the printer with HP and I have received frequent updates over the years as a result: the software is almost unrecognisable now from the day I first bought it and downloaded the supplied CD. I have never used compatibles and I use the XL inks, which last a lot longer than the standard 364 inks. I used to buy my cart's from Amazon, but then I found they were cheaper from HP, using the HP Solution Center. Delivery is also quicker: I have ordered in the am and received my cart's next day.

I use genuine HP cart's because a hobby is scanning, copying, editing and printing old and new photos for family and friends. I love doing this and I know that compatibles would not give me the same results. Despite what anyone else may think about that, I know it's true, because a relative bought the same printer a few months after mine. He uses compat's and colours in his photos fade after a couple of years. I have photos made from the first day I had my printer and they are still as good as new.

Having said that, if you don't need that quality from your prints, just buy what does the job you want. Everyone has different requirements, but a printer that has all colours within one cartridge, is a false economy. One colour runs out and the cart is scrap.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I've narrowed my search down to two printers, both laser and both Samsung. My two choices are The. Samsung 2026W and The Samsung 2070W the difference been 2070W is an all in one printer and costs £30 more. I'm wondering to myself if the extra facility is worth it?

Do I need it? Not especially, but I have a young girl who might find it useful when she goes to second level school in 2018 and I do occasionally take items to my local library to have them copied

It will be one of these two machine, both seem to have good reviews and both are Which? Best Buys

I'd say a good choice, easy to obtain cheap aftermarket toners for those, in fact the D111S is probably our best selling low end toner cartridge, customers seem to be happy with these machines.

my latest Epson Xpression stopped printing after the about a year, everything else works on it but it wont print, tried all remedies customer service is useless. Gave up with inkjets and have gone over to laser which is much much better albeit it's only mono. It's cheaper to go to Boots for the odd color print.

A fairly cheap remedy on the inkjets that have stopped printing (such as if a certain colour stops coming through) is to start printing in super-high photo quality for a while and 8 times out of 10 it will eventually start working again.

Inkjets tend to pack up printing because if they're not used regularly the ink dries up in the cartridge. With lasers this isn't an issue as they use powder to generate print.

Once opened inkjet cartidges tend to dry out or block their jets, making them an expensive and troublesome option for occasional use.

I have a Canon inkjet and a Brother laser. The latter gets hammered, the former rarely gets switched on except when scanning is needed. I use compatible cartridges and inks for both. In the case of the Brother, that's around £15 for approx 2500 pages. Compatible inks for the Canon are also cheap as chips and work well if used regularly. NEVER buy original inks/toners at rip-off prices.
