Got the HP Curry sales guff about HP and instant ink
Bought a Canon despite it, very pleased0 -

Or significantly less - they're only meant to fill the pipes from empty and do a couple of test/registration prints.
HP are !!!!!!s for this abusive model - I had one printer (not my choice) which would print an ink-heavy test/registration page with EVERY SINGLE CHANGE of ink, or if you unplugged the device.
Currently have Panasonic mono lasers (good print value) and a Canon reconditioned inkjet from ebay tweaked to use compatible cartridges which are cheap as chips in bulk - the inks are a bit 'thin' colour-wise, but they're good enough for my regular needs.0 -
I'd avoid the HP4527 for the reason that's it's got a tri-colour ink cart, rather than 4 separate ones. But if you are determined to get that one, then Tesco Direct also have it in stock for £39.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I bought a HP 4500? Only because it was dumped in the clearance basket in the electrical department of ASDA, Duck tape holding a partial box and mostly a shopping bag.
It was so cheap i did wonder if there were any inks or cables. Turned out to be a good purchase. Inks still sealed in the packs and cables and even photo software which i didnt even give a 2nd glance. I have paint.net and paintshop pro.
Not half filled carts. They run out quicker yes. because the printer has to prime the pipes and print head etc.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I purchased a Brother to replace my Canon when it broke. So far, am impressed. My spouse also purchased a similar Brother to mine and she has printed over 100 pages of images ( she makes cards) and the original inks are still over 50%.
Would avoid Epson as they use an awful lot of I know in their cleaning cycle.Never Knowingly Understood.

Here's something I hadn't thought of. I'm a very light user, I've no need to print colour. Considering the cost of ink would it be more economical, even if the initial cash outlay was more, to opt for a mono laser printer as they don't need to clean ink heads and the toner seems to last much longer. I'm thinking long term costs0

It's a no brainer if you are only wanting to print black, the starter toners (supplied in the box) on most, if not all low end Brother Laser Printers is 700 pages, with the full yield toners being between 1000 and 2600 pages depending on machine, Drum life is typically 12000 pages on these machines so as a light user, the toner cartridge is going to last ages and it will be a fair few years before you need a drum, Brother also do all in one mono laser printers at the low end of the market, certainly sub £100. I believe Samsung also do all in one mono laser printers at this end on the market, however off the top of my head, I'm not sure of the starter cartridge yields, though i suspect, similar to Brother.
Going back to your opening post, I've not heard anything about Canon withdrawing from the domestic market, however, I would say, every time I'm in PC World/Currys the sales people seem to have some sort of thing going on where they are very keen to push HP Instant Ink and we get customers coming to us telling us the same thing and have sold printers off the back of it because the customer didn't like the hard sell.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -

Yes they seem to push HP, i went in for an Epson Printer 2 years ago and they tried to persuade me to get an HP printer.
The don't like it if a customer now what they are talking about as they cannot push certain branded products on the customer0
