New job - signed contract but potentially job withdrawn?

  • It shouldn't, but have you called them and asked? If they have decided they don't need to employ you, you are below the bottom of the list of priorities for them. When a thing is more important to you than it is to the person you are waiting on, you usually have to chase them.
Yep, I called their HR a few days ago and was told that they do not know anything as they just hand out the contracts and she would ask the hiring manager to update me.

All fair possibilities but what is their problem with telling me that the job is no longer available surely that does not take two weeks and more?

They might not know themselves yet.

It could be a takeover, merging of departments, management restructure, etc, etc. All things that usually take a lot longer than first thought to bottom out.

    Ring the hiring manager.

I understand its frustrating but there might be things going on in the company which mean the hiring manager can not say or doesn't know whether you have a job yet..might be the permission to hire or funding was suspended overnight..the managers not exactly going to tell you this because it would open up further questions from you which they can't or don't want to answer...all you can do is wait now unfortunately

Thanks for the reply. I understand, just seems unprofessional that I'm not even been updated on the situation after working hard to get the job in the first place. I'll just have to wait and hope they do something soon

I know it's frustrating but other than keeping in contact with them there's not a lot you can do, unless you decide to tell them that you won't take the job at all. It could easily be that whatever is happening is confidential (for example, the takeover that motorman mentioned as a possibility) and they simply cannot tell you the reason for the delay at this time.
  • Does anyone know where I stand if the position is taken away from me? With regards to there been an employment contract in place

It is unprofessional that they haven't told you anything, but I would assume that the job isn't available any more and move on.

Maybe they aren't sure if the budget will stretch to employ you.

A resturcturing has happened where the role you role you applied for is up in the air.

The person you were replacing has had a change of heart and isn't leaving the company.

Could be many reasons, I agree it's not very professional and maybe you consider looking elsewhere.
  • Thanks everyone for the replies. I know some say 'assume that the job is not available and move on' but this was near enough a dream job for me and surely an explanation would not hurt from a big company

If you mean can you force them to employ you, then maybe yes. However they could (and would) sack you immediately, giving proper notice.
What's the notice period in the contract? If you have a start date and a notice period, maybe you could potentially claim a salary for that notice period. Up to you whether you would want to. If it's your dream job and you want to keep the option open of employment by them at a later date, obviously it would close that door
