New job - signed contract but potentially job withdrawn?

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had experienced a similar situation or could advise me.

Basically I have a new job with a very high profile worldwide company. I had two interviews, travelled far for them and also completed a task which took 2 days of my own time which I presented at my final interview.

I was offered the job and sent an offer letter and a written contract (signed by the company) and a start date for the middle of June.

A few days after receiving this the hiring manager called me and said don't hand in your notice a few things have happened over night. Now it has been two weeks since this conversation and I still don't know what's happened I've had a couple of messages from the hiring manager but just telling me to wait on more information.

Has anyone experienced this or does anyone know where I stand?

Thank you!

Simples - currently you stay in your job and decide whether you can take the risk of moving even if they do give you a start date.

Your piece of paper is worthless in terms of job security and you've certainly no comeback on them if they change their mind
  • I do have an exact start that is written in my contract which is why the situation is very strange - I don't see why they haven't just told me I can no longer have the job

    'Something happened overnight'

Maybe another member of staff resigned, meaning they needed someone more experienced for the role.

Maybe their first choice applicant turned it down, but then subsequently accepted it.

Could be one of a million things.

Yes I suppose those could be a possibility however I'm not sure about the first choice applicant accepting after turning it down. I was contacted mid morning after the interview so I presume that I was the first choice for the employer.

It is very strange for such a big company I'm not sure why they haven't just said if I can no longer have the job

The person who chose you might have died and the person now in charge might not have wanted you.

They could have received an AMAZING cv late and though, sod it, well hire them.

It could literally be one of a million things.

Have they signed the contract, or are you the only person who has signed it?
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

They have signed the contract first (I have this electronically and through the post) I have returned it to them signed by myself too.

It says the company signed it in the first post.

That's only gonna get them notice pay anyway...

All fair possibilities but what is their problem with telling me that the job is no longer available surely that does not take two weeks and more?
  • It shouldn't, but have you called them and asked? If they have decided they don't need to employ you, you are below the bottom of the list of priorities for them. When a thing is more important to you than it is to the person you are waiting on, you usually have to chase them.
