    You're certainly not going to "save" any money, by buying a new car.

    Assuming its pre Euro IV cars, then theres going to be an expectation that people move from maybe a £1,000 Mondeo to a new £20,000 EV?

    Surely - given most people will then PCP or finance the new car of some sort, you're then feeding the "alleged" problem of excessive debt in cars?

    I remember the last scrappage scheme, people trading in perfectly good serviceable cars for £2K off a Panda or such like. Anyone who did their research could have got that off regardless. :rotfl:

    Lol if that's true what a complete waste of time! Almost everyone who has a diesel car uses them for longer journeys (or should be anyway), which is exactly what an EV is bad at.
  • The only people who will benefit from any scrappage scheme will be the car companies, so don't worry about it.

    I suppose there's no such thing as a free lunch.

    I have a 2005 diesel Ford Focus and was assuming it would need replacing over the next couple of years - presumably with very little market or normal trade-in value.

    When I moved from petrol to diesel, it was from a car that I had problems with starting on a winter's morning, to one that didn't. It was from a car whose mpg varied from 22 to 50, to a car that varied from 40 to 60.
    The diesel was well travelled - previous owner a teacher commuted from Cardiff to Porthcawl. Whereas mine was more like 9 miles a day, with at one point six mainly motorway trips of 160 miles each way.
    Now on second diesel, from 1.9TD, to 1.4HTi - mpg up to 45 - 70, Road Tax down from £180 to £30. Yet, my mileage has also gone down quite a bit.

    But with an '03' plate interesting to see what scrappage could amount to - yet it would still seem premature for my car still not done 56,000 miles!!

    I've just got back from one of the rare long journeys in my diesel car. Most of the time I'm just pootling around the local A and B roads. As it's too old to have a DPF, it doesn't seem to care what journeys I do.

    I got a diesel because I was warned not to buy the petrol one (the Rover K series engine has a terrible reputation).
    If it sticks, force it.
    If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
