  • Firstly, congratulations on the job offer!! Incredible, you should be really proud :) well done you!

Your pros and cons list is fab and definitely a good way to look at your thoughts and map things out. Personally I would recommend you take emotions out of the mix. Delete the points that deal with guilt. Your career is YOURS and no one elses, you are allowed to be selfish. Yes your current employer has developed you and provided you with opportunities but it is by no means a life sentence. The reason you have been successful in your career and thus your recent interview is because of you!! Your employer didn't sit that interview for you. You are where you are today because of YOU. Ultimately, we should all work to live not live to work. Your job is there to provide you with the resources you need to live the life you want.

You have to make the right decision for you, whichever one that may be :) I hope I've been able to let you look at the situation from another perspective. It's definitely not an easy choice and no doubt whatever decision you make you might feel some sense of regret down the line but that's normal.

    Good luck :) xx

My tuppence worth - your current employers sound horrid, and I think the new job (despite the more structured/ formal approach) sounds like it ticks a lot of boxes.

Don't stay in a job because of guilt or promises of promotion in the future. My experience is that they never materialise.

Plus, that 20% pension contribution is :D

Thank you both. I actually think I will do better with a more structured/formal approach. One of my major complaints at my current job is that my direct line manager is completely useless and does very little work, and I'm constantly shunted her work and expected to handle it on my own - yet she gets paid triple what I do and works less than half the amount of hours I do due to "working from home".

Belle, you are absolutely correct. I have nothing more to add to what you've said because it's completely, utterly true.

I've dropped the new job a line asking about when I can start. Ideally, I want to start in April next year. My contractual notice is 3 months anyway, so I'd only be delaying the start date by a few months. I believe they will agree but if not, I'll be back here to moan some more...

There is another lot of jobs that they're hiring for in January but there's no guarantee I'd get it. Not sure I'd want to risk it.

  • Oh, and another bonus money-wise on the new job - I WILL ALWAYS KNOW WHEN PAYDAY IS.

At my current job, they sometimes just fail to pay us for up to a week after payday. Nobody else ever seems to feel the pinch. It's rough.

At my new job, they pay on the last working day of the month, without fail. Imagine that!

  • Right. The decision has been made. I'm taking the new job.

I just need to work out logistics now - when will I start, when will I give notice, etc.

    Can't wait to quit...

I think that's a fantastic decision (based on the information you have given, of course :D)

    Exciting times!

P.S. regarding finishing times and starting new job etc, make sure it works for YOU and the new employer, not just your existing employer. Don't p*** off your new employer by manoeuvering around the current employer out of guilt.

Fortunately my new employer is a champion of flexibility, equality, fairness etc so I have a little bit of wiggle room. I will prioritise myself and my new job though! It also helps that the new job is desperate for more staff and I have worked on some really high profile cases, and have a lot more experience than is the norm for my age and years worked. I'm a bit of a catch in that regard, if I do say so myself...

I've asked my new employer about rough start dates and asked whether April would be OK - in my line of work, it's definitely don't ask, don't get :p

If they say no, that's fine. I'll start whenever they want me.

    Really excited now!

  • Received my valuation today and got the dreaded £0 valuation

That's the trouble with new builds.

Waiting for the mortgagee to make enquiries so that a proper valuation can be given. Fed up!

  • That is indeed the problem with newbuilds, but it's also a problem that everyone is aware of so no big deal really!

Well done on making the right decision on the job. Personally I don't think you need to feel ANY guilt about not "keeping your side of the bargain" over staying until next year when presumably they also "struck a deal" with you to a) pay you on a certain date and b) give you X days per year holiday. By the sound of it they have routinely failed on both parts so they should fully expect to be told to go and *ahem* themselves when it comes to any loyalty being expected on your part! :D

You're completely right. I've always known I get treated like rubbish, but since I decided to accept the new job offer, it's like I've come out of a fog.

The new job has said they're fine for me to start in April but they won't give me a contract til January in that case. I just have to hope that the world doesn't get tanked after Brexit and they still have a job to offer me come January

Work is horrible, as always. I'm also sick at the moment with a nasty flu, but still have to drag my sorry butt into work, otherwise I'll just end up missing loads of deadlines and being even more stressed.

Going to try a different bank for my mortgage...the issue I'm having is pretty likely to be an issue for all lenders across the board though :(

    Stress, stress, stress.
