Bridesmaids breakfast

I have to provide breakfast for 5 on the wedding day, one vegetarian bridesmaid, one coeliac and dairy free, and the bride has vetoed eggs as she thinks she will burp offensively! I'd like to avoid brightly coloured foods that might stain, though that may be over cautious. I'd wondered about kedgeree, but I don't know if that might repeat too.

Out of an entire wedding, this is the only bit that has me stumped. I'm happy to cook in advance, but don't want to get into a big production on the morning. I know you are all full of inspiration - please share some with me.

Doesn't kedgeree have fish and eggs?

I don't know whether they want something fancy or are more interested in something which will keep them going but porridge (you can get gluten-free and make it with non-dairy milk for the coeliac) is a good way to set people up for the day. It also fills you up without eating a vast quantity of food, always good under slinky wedding/bridesmaid's dresses.

    Kedgeree uses eggs.

Just do a buffet of cereals, fruit, toast and bagels.... with nut milk and GF alternatives.

Depending on the time of the wedding, you may want to do something more substantial or take protein bars for a snack after the ceremony as it can take an age for photos and seating everyone for the reception meal.

Fry up with their choice from:

    bacon
veg & meat sausage (check for breadcrumb content)
    beans
    mushroom
    tomato
    egg (optional)
toast (could get some GF bread, but it's generally rank)
    waffle (prob not GF)

    Don't forget the Bucks Fizz.

Probably easiest to ask first; the coeliac and dairy free should be used to suggesting options.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

Sausage Sarnies?....choice of meat or veggie sausages...get GF bread for the one bridesmaid.

Veggie Breakfast Tray Bake?....cut up veggie sausages into chunks, pop into a baking dish, add mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, cold cooked potatoes...drizzle with oil and bake ...very simple!

Don't forget to have tea and coffee....and maybe some Bucks Fizz?
  • A big platter of fresh fruit, a kedgeree but made with avocado instead of eggs and perhaps roasted cashew nuts instead of fish and with fried mushrooms stirred through it to serve, croissants for those who can have gluten and gluten free toast and marmalade/jam for the coeliac girlie with a lovely big jug of orange juice and a pot of tea and a pot of coffee with a dish of assorted dried fruit to nibble and fill the gaps. Should be suitable for all dietary needs and substantial enough to see you all through the pre wedding preps and the ceremony.

I'd also be thinking in terms of a buffet.

Probably veering on Dutch style - so:

    - assorted "nice" type breads (I'd include some fruit bread in that - of the sprouted wheat variety obtainable from health food shops)

    - healthy type crackers (often on the checkout area of Ald* stores these days for instance)

    - nut butter (eg cashew nut), as well as butter

    - breakfast cheese

    - yogurts (both milk ones and coconut milk ones)

    - fresh fruit

    - tomatoes/olives/pickled cucumbers (a nod to middle east breakfasts)

    - milk of both dairy type and alternative type (Rice Dream rice milk is nice).

Hi, for the gluten / diary free it may be worth speaking to them. Gluten free products can vary wildly with some breads being lovely and others rank and it can be very expensive. I'd prefer to take my own bread along rather then have someone buy a whole loaf, it just gets wasted otherwise.

Why not ask them what they suggest.... that way you'll know each of them can eat something... rather than coming up with a list of alien foods from an internet forum and finding on the day 3 "don't like that, won't eat that ...."

I would definitely ask the coeliac and dairy free what they like. Personally, unless the bride seriously wants bacon sarnies, I'd go with the simple buffets suggested above, and definitely fresh fruit & yoghourt.
Having said that, I find that avocados vary so widely that I wouldn't want to rely on them. I do a 'kedgeree' with sweet corn and cashews that I think would work well. But I also think that you could stick with the cold stuff suggested and not worry about cooking.
Rice cakes are really nice, you can put out cream cheese (and soya version) for spreading, for topping: nice jam, fruit, smoked salmon (use the cheapo 'off cuts')
I have fond memories of a family wedding breakfast (as in real breakfast) of cinnamon toast.
Myself, I'd make a cheapo version of buck's fizz! But you may want to keep them sober??????

Rice cakes are like marginally-edible polystyrene!

As there are so many variables, I'm another one who says to ask the people involved.
