Car Hire Scam Warning - InterRent (Car Del Mar)

WHAT A TOTAL RIP OFF!
This is what happened to us at Marseille Airport in July 2018. We had waited about an hour to get served and was asked if we wanted the extra cover. I said no, we didn't want any add ons, explaining that we had already taken separate cover out with another company and showed the receptionist the insurance document as proof. As it was a Sunday and most food shops close at midday, we were running dangerously late, so I signed the contract and we hurriedly left to find some provisions for the evening before the shops closed until Monday. It wasn't until we arrived back in the UK on 5th August and received an emailed copy of our rental agreement, that we realised we had been charged an extra €41.67 for Assistance Plus. I then took this up with Auto-europe through whom we had booked with Interrent and have just received a reply back which more or less said that as we had signed the contract, we had agreed to the extra cover. How much plainer can you be than saying no and showing the receptionist your separate extra cover document? Needless to say, we will not be hiring a car from either Interrent nor Auto-europe in future.0 -
Annual cover is fine in concept however I am questioning its value after recent experience with Interrent. I declined their SCDW cover as I have my own annual excess cover policy. All fine if nothing goes wrong. I hit a pot hole and the front tyre blew. Absolute night mare trying to get anything done by Interrent. I accept I will pay for the tyre, however, then found out I was not entitled to a replacement vehicle as I had not taken their SCDW cover! Option offered was to pay for tyre, cancel my hire and rehire me another vehicle at more cost and excess deposit. As I had 2 days left I declined and kept the car on its space saver and didn't really use it again apart from return trip to airport. In my case it was blown tyre, but it could have been anything, not entitled to a replacement vehicle is a concern I hadn't thought of. I would have thought if I paid to hire a car for 7 days I would have to be provided with a functional vehicle for that period, but not according to Interrent!!0

I think with any car rental agencies one has to scrutinise and what is signed for. I understand in a foreign country especially where English isn't the main language and you think everything you needed was pre paid for and just sign the documentation.
The single or annual trip excess policies are good value bought independent from the rental company but they will still try to push these on you or slip it into the contract unawares.
I have recently returned from Fuerteventura where I hired a car with Interrent. I signed the contract as requested checked the car took pictures etc. On my return I asked someone to check over the vehicle and give it the all clear which they did, although they never gave me an electronic receipt like most rental companies do so I asked the attendant to sign the contract.
Fast forward a week and I checked my credit card to find an additional payment. I contacted them and was told that I had extended my rental for four days, which was a load of blx. That has now been refunded.
Regardless of company check the paperwork and the car and get a some form of final receipt and then check your credit card statement later.0 -
Similar story. They were even more brazen than some of these other stories. My booking on expedia stated everything was already covered. The clerk did not mention ANY Policy or upgrade whatsoever and simply instructed me to sign the digital machine for the deposit.
Turns out, he added a bunch of services and additional insurance that was never mentioned. I didn't see or receive any contracts. They returned 90 euros, and kept 170 which apparently was for services they charged. Total scam.0
