It's been necessary when on holiday in the UK to see a GP. The only information needed was personal details and my GP. I don't even have photos ID .

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

They can ask for ID. There is no legal requirement to provide it, and they cannot withhold treatment on basis you haven't got ID. Anyone could provide false details anyway of a real NHS patient. What if you are homeless - you wouldn't have ID then, and the CCG are legally responsible for paying for your treatment.

Most homeless people who are UK citizens would have a NINO. I accept that treatment is provided to many people who are either entitled to it but can't prove that, or are not entitled to it but get round the system anyway, but there surely has to be some attempt to try, otherwise we may as well say our doors are completely open to health tourism?
  • How? If the patient withholds details of their own GP, or states they do not want the information passed on (I know its not normal practice within the NHS to ask consent to pass information on before sharing it), then how can the details be passed to the regular GP?

So in your ideal scenario I could go from doctor to doctor, none of them knowing I had just left the other's surgery, and get prescribed the same thing from all of them?

Yes, basically. Although I would want to do it to protect my privacy rather than to obtain prescription drugs.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?
  • Hi everyone

Just wanted to update. I rang the dr this morning as soon as they opened. I said I needed an urgent appointment with the dr, stood my ground, and got to see one at 9.30am. Signed off for 3 weeks, given a prescription and booked in for bloods etc.

So no need to worry anymore about the whole backdating thing. Thanks to you guys for helping me be a bit more assertive with the receptionist- it's like trying to break through a brick wall but I got there!

Now just need to find out who I send the line to as never had one before!

    Thanks :)

Glad that things worked out for you, hope you soon feel better.

Maybe call work to give a heads up that you are off for a further three weeks and ask who to send the fit note to.

Well, clearly some would abuse it, so you need a way of dealing with that.

Secondly, medical history is vitally important when dealing with diagnosis. A doctor who had no visibility of your previous history would be at a massive disadvantage. I can't see why on earth you would want this and I am sure that doctors would unanimously reject any attempts to give you the right to withhold history from them.

    Quite.

Whilst surrysaver may have the right to behave as s/he has suggested I would have thought it was far for wise, from a medical point of view, and detrimental to the NHS which we all pay for. It could easily involve tests being repeated which, in some cases, would be bad for the patient and would always be a waste of resources. It seems to me you should either accept the NHS system (which I know is far from perfect) or make your own private arrangements.
