This was a credit card payment so not going to come out of the bank directly.

It happens occasionally. I've experienced it maybe three times in about 40 years of using credit cards - I can remember a restaurant in London, a petrol station in Surrey and Brussels Airport. I think my longest delay was about 10 months.

I don't worry about it. I record my own expenditure so I know what I owe and simply treat it as extended credit.

So you had no actual reason to think it had been charged, you simply assumed it had been charged.
Do you now see the need to check the transactions on bank and credit card statements to ensure you actively manage your finances?

They'd have a further 5 years and 2-3 months, so they're in plenty of time.

Firstly, you are assuming that the OP is in England or Wales.
Secondly, it's the card scheme rules that are actually important.

I am not sure why everyone was assuming the OP didn't think they had to pay and having a go at them? Nowhere did they say they're refusing to pay for it!

I've had the same thing happen to me. I've gone away for 2 weeks, paid for the rental car. Come back, completely forgot about it and noticed a lot of holiday payments after my return, thinking thats it. Then 4 months later boom, the payment for rental car comes out. At first I completely forgot what it was and almost phoned the bank until I looked back through my emails.

I haven't complained about it, but the same as the OP, I have questioned as to how long merchants have to take a payment. It was just a question.
