Credit card charged 9 months later

Went on holiday last August and had a hire car which was paid with CC. Thought this was charged months ago. recently had Eurocar charge my CC for the amount, a clear 8-9 month gap.

How long do merchants have to do this? I initially contested this with my bank as l thought this was paid months ago.

Presumably they should have the right without time expiry - after all, you owe/owed them the money.

Hopefully next time you will take more responsibility.

It's 6 months without notification. But that's in the UK, so maybe does not apply.

They'd have a further 5 years and 2-3 months, so they're in plenty of time.

You owe the debt for six years.

Although if the payment hasn't been taken for six months, the merchant is supposed to advise you that the payment is still outstanding and will be taken in the near future.

Apparently, this did not happen in your case and you can complain about this, but you can't complain about you having to pay.

As above^ but if you owed the money and were given over 8 months interest free credit, what's the problem?

You could do a chargeback for late presentation as the transaction took place more than 120 days ago.

However you still owe the debt to the company.

That's a maximum though isn't it? It could be a lot shorter (3-7 days even), depending on the merchant acquirer's T&Cs.

The bank would/might be in a position to refuse after such a long period, citing late presentment.

I bought petrol at a garage once, approx £25, put it in my spreadsheet. They took the money out of my account about 8 months later, I'd nearly written it off. No notification or explanation.

Loads of people tend to assume when they pay for something at the checkout or online that the money will go right away. It should do, but I work for a bank and I regularly see situations where people clearly have managed to not realise their balance has gone up by a significant chunk and nothing has appeared on the statement. Usually the same people who tell me they pay close attention to their balance. Even seen one gentleman who didn't seem to notice he was a grand better off than he should have been.
