I am wondering if she might have difficulties even getting on the flight without you there. If it was booked as a package then both of you would have to check in, then the hotel wouldn't be too happy if only one of you show up. They might decide to charge her a supplement for single occupancy.

Now I'm not too sure about any of this just throwing it out there
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

But surely the hotel has allready been paid for two people so not out of pocket if only one turns up,might even make money if A/I or B & B as only one person eating.

The best thing for the poster is that the ex-friend gets somebody else to go and gets her money back less cost of name change etc. or writes it off and moves on.

How close is it to when you travel? I can't see just one of you being able to cancel, even if friend agreed, as that would leave an underoccupancy payment. And even if you both cancelled, depending on how close to the travel date, you would lose some/all of your payment.
Someone to take your place seems the only viable option but if friend won't agree then you may lose the lot.

People don't turn up for holidays/flights all the time, it's not grounds to refuse someone they were travelling with to board a flight or refuse them a hotel room. Same as people book packages but don't use the hotel.

But in this case one of the party is using the hotel. Whether the room has already been paid for or not, the hotel could argue that there would have been a supplement for under occupancy and could rightly ask for the extra to be paid.

    What extra?

If it's a double room then it has been paid for in full as a double room.
An under occupancy charge (single supplement) would only be due if one person was occupying a double room and this charge would be to cover the cost lost due to one person using a twin bedded room. As the twin bedded room has been paid for in full, there is no possible loss to the hotel.

As Ganga stated. Because of the situation, the hotel may well be making more money then if there were two people in the room if the deal included any food.

It makes no difference to the hotel. They'll be paid at the rate agreed between the tour operator and the hotel, irrespective. The customer has no contract with the hotel and they cannot request more money. Not that they'd know how much they'd paid in the first place anyway.

But have you got your paid for ticket from your erstwhile friend?
Have you got any paper work?
If you are still desperate to go you could possibly file a 'lost ticket' claim but even then all correspondence would probably have to go to the first named.
If all goes pear shaped you could possibly sue your friend in the county court for debt and return of your money plus expenses, in view of the apparent complete lack of cooperation after banking your money......? You did not sign the booking form? You have no contract so have you got receipts for your money? Such a scare may bring forth fruit unless she wants to turn up to refute your claim. How much is all this aggro worth to you?

Try booking a cruise for 2 people (all food included) and then only one of you turn up, and then you will see that they can charge you a single person supplement. Also ferries will sometimes charge you if you dont use the return part of the trip. (Often cheaper to book 2 mini breaks, than one return trip, but they sting you for only using half of each mini break).
Not saying this is the same as the op, but it can and does happen.
