website help

Hi all,

My wife has ran her own business for the last five years and her company website was set up by a company that she was referred to whilst speaking to a consultant at the time from the free organisation that was known Business Link. She has always been billed from the company that created the website and set up the hosting of the site/domain name. But she received an email from 1&1 saying her domain is up for renewal. How do we find out if this is legit and who actually hosts her websites domain name as the company/person that created the site has since disappeared. The website has been fine for 5 years though after this email came in to her inbox today my wife has recalled that the company that set up the website hasn't billed her for the last 2 years when shes looked back through correspondence but that seems to be the standard billing period (every 2 years) its just odd as she always dealt with the company that created the website and paid them.

Thanks

Or they could just post back here and we'll help them to do it for free.

Lastly you need to make sure you have access to the portal for the hosting, (note the portal is different from the back end of website) if this developer has gone belly up you need to be concerned NOW because as soon as they stop paying your website will be suspended with the account.
    .

Yes it would be easy if the website uses cpanel then they should take a backup, so it would be easy to change hosts if needed, but i assume if they have paid for a all in 1 service and 1&1 have contacted them for domain renewal then whoever the developer was has been using 1&1 who use their own inhouse portal, which wont migrate to any other portal, but still they should take a backup of the site, so at least they have a copy

@David ^^ Your post will confuse the OP, talking about IDtags etc is for later ..

The beginning bit was good though, the OP needs to find out first who hosts his domain using the whois site.

However, if the company has folded, I wouldnt have thought they would have the good grace to transfer all the hosting to the name of the OP !!??

This is most likely fishing for business.

So - first things first - OP, who is your domain hosted with ??

Exactly thats the first thing and if the Op does not know how to do this then they could easily post the domain name here and one of us could find out and offer assistance

Bit of an assumption on your part, some assume the worst of people. One liner with no help contrary to my post which answers all OP questions and more.

In your first sentence you want to 'recommend' someone. In your last, you want to 'signpost' them somewhere else. Sounds like a referral to me.

As for answering all and more. All your post will do is freak them out.

Normal practice on this board is to get the first part dealt with (which, granted, you have done with the whois link), then invite them back to offer options when more information is available.

Why post them anywhere else? There are plenty on here who know how to deal with WP or Joomla.
You'll also note that everyone here is offering their advice for free, it's the altruistic ethos of the site. You'll also be aware of the site rules on referrals in posts....whether it's for peanuts or not.

We just don't all throw the kitchen sink on the first run....

I try to be as thorough as possible in one post, .

I know you do, and you can be very helpful.

But you must understand that not everyone is as technically adept as you, and using the "blunderbus" approach can leave many readers hazy eyed.

In this situation, the first thing to do is find out the host, because if its not 1&1 then the rest of your very helpful post is moot :)

I have had many of these emails from hosting companies trying to poach you when they see your domain up for renewal .

So lets hold off the full textbook till we find out what were dealing with :)

Id hate to see you in verbose mode ;)
  • Thanks for all of your help guys

I have managed to follow the details you kindly posted and got the info from ww.name.com

As far as i can see her domain is up for renewal next month and is indeed hosted by 1&1. What is the "name on server" bit at the bottom it says Bluezon in here and this is the company that created the website and domain as a package and until lately thought they were still running the show for her. Does this mean they are still in charge of the website?

I'd add a screen shot but i cant see how to attach a file onto this feed.

I have login details for the website itself so i can update, add and change things.

How do i get a copy of the website?

Maybe she should call 1&1 and see what the crack is as it seems to be a legit email that they have sent.

    Thanks
