I'm finding we rarely watch actual Sky content and are mostly using the Sky box for terrestrial channels and freeview channels, this make the £74 pm cost very expensive, I like the HD content and the Sky+ recording facility, can I cancel or keep a minimal subscription whilst keeping the HD and recording capability?

Cancel Sky and buy a Humax satellite decoder, this will be far cheaper than paying a subscription to Sky ad infinitum.
Do note that you cannot (cheaply) subscribe to additional HD channels other than those which are already freely available. Subscription HD channels are always (expensive) subscription only.0 -
Freesat might be option for you, the humax box already mentioned works with Freesat, there is 1 that works with it.
It might work as already mentioned with the current dish.0 -
Another option is to not pay full price (if that's what you're doing) for your present package.
It's £38 a month for Boxsets (which includes HD) on the Q system so what exactly are you getting for £74 a month?0 -

It will certainly work with the existing dish. Same alignment, same LNB, same cabling. Just a straight box swap-and it'll pay for itself in about 4 months..
OP, you could just cancel the Sky subscription service and use the existing box to get Freesat from Sky, but you will lose the PVR functionality. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

No susbcription = no recording. If you're paying £74, you're paying for some packages - Cinema, Sports or whatever. You also say you're not watching them. Go down to the basic HD package (around £20 per month) to keep the most popular channels (including Sky 1, for example) and you also keep recording and HD.
If you're not happy with ~£20 per month, you can pay ~£10 per month just to use the recording facility. Do that for a year, however, and you could have bought a YouView box, instead, for example.0 -

You need Boxsets for the extra HD channels which is £35.25 full price, however 60% discount is simple which will bring it down to £14.10 a month.0 -
Don't really have anything special except Sky Sports, its just crept up over a number of years, I think the Humax box is looking like the way to go.0

Just cancel and have it switched off and you may well get the 75% off offer. They are even offering 60% off to people who don't go to switch off. (I'm paying the equivalent of under £6/month for Boxed Sets and Cinema; formerly Family and Movies.)0

Ah, I haven't been a new customer for a long time - OP claims they only ever watch the terrestrial channels anyway, so not necessary.0 -

I was only offered 50% on Boxsets package last week from retentions, in fact operator did not object or stop me when I said "I will proceed to cancellation". No further retention offer was offered. Instead I just changed package to 1 box and removed multi room.
Out of interest will a sky box work (in basic function) when disabled from multi room, or is the complete box defunct when switched off?0
