He won't believe me when I tell him that the current ADSL price £29.99 includes line rental
    I don't want to get old !!

My dad was almost 80 when he died, but stayed money aware until his last few months when dementia took over. He was determined that his home and savings wouldn't pay for his care and he got his wish as he died a few weeks after becoming eligible to pay for his care home .

BT Line rental + broadband is only 29.99 for the first 12 months, then it goes to 40.99.
Not quite - then they try to charge £40.99 and if they persist and won't budge on that price you go elsewhere for another new customer deal and with any luck cashback too.

I'm getting geriatric but not geriatric enough to let somebody charge more for a product than I can get it elsewhere.

It used to be the case that you had to pick an ISP carefully to avoid one with insufficient capacity for their customer numbers but these days I rarely see complaints about evening slowdowns other than from some VM customers. Read up on the hardly taxing tech requirements and avoid having to call an ISP TS as most are beyond dire.

If I was expected to pay that amount, I'd go without and log on at the library , now and then.

The cashback will always beat any renewal deal they can come up with, I don't even bother haggling anymore.

His father is not going to switch from BT. Standard price for BT is really expensive (18.99 line rental + 22 adsl = 40.99 a month). Even if he lies and says he will leave to get a discount, then eventually they'll call his bluff & he's already said he won't. If there is a problem with the line ever then his father will blame his son for messing with his line "it wouldn't ever have gone wrong if you hadn't made me ask them for a discount", even if he doesn't switch.

I have a similar situation with my dad who has BT/British Gas/whoever took over from the electricity board & refuses to switch. I think he might have a direct debit for his energy now that the local banks close. BT is actually a DD from my sisters account and he pays her cash. I tried, he's adamant, you just have to let go.
