How do I know it's my gas meter?

I agree with Footyguy - I think that you have taken on the business supply.

I deal with a few commercial supplies and its not easy even to change a billing address.

I suspect the small meter is a private submeter and you should be paying the business

Is the business your landlord?

What about the Electric ?

You need to talk to the business owner.

My only issue is, I've now changed providers and reading the difference in the readings, after just 19 days there, my gas bill has come to around £35 which seems excessive considering I don't have the heating on and only use gas for hot water / showers.

Can anyone help I a definitive way to know which meter is mine? Is there any number I can call that can tell me the correct serial number etc?

I've reported this to my energy supplier for them to chase up. But I do believe it is the incorrect gas meter. I will try all the recommendations that you have all suggested. Thanks!

Hello LukeTheDiver and welcome to the Forums.

As macman says, sounds like there's a main meter with a sub meter running off it. Guessing but this sub meter is possibly recording the gas used in your apartment. Like macman advises, make a note of the serial numbers on each meter (photos would be great). Are either of these numbers the same as that on your bill?

Also, try the suggestions others have made to see which meter is recording your gas.

Are we your new supplier or were we the existing supplier when you moved in and you've now switched away? If you've switched to us, let us have the information including any photos. We can check we're billing to the right meter.

If you've changed from us to another supplier, there's little we can do now and you'll need to continue talking to your new provider. Although, once you've established the meter recording the gas, let us know if this is different to the one we've previously billed to. We'll need to rebill to the right meter.

Sorry if my speculation is wide of the mark but hope it helps point you in the right direction.

So the lady downstairs takes readigs from the big meter.
And Eon us the big meter.

So I'd suggest Eon charge the business downstairs for usage based on the big meter. I'd also suggst that covers total usage for the building, including your flat.

Makes sense. So the small meter measures how much of the total building's gas usage you are using in the flat.

If correct, you should not be paying Eon, or any other 'supplier' for your gas - you should be paying whoever pays the bill for the total building. ie the business downstairs gets billed for bothem you and them based on the big meter, then you reimburse them your share based on the little meter.

What does your tenancy agreement say? Read it and look for a clause covering utilities. You might find that electricity and water is the same set-up, but your tenancy agreement should make clear
i) whether you pay for utilities (or they are included in the rent) and
ii) who you pay (and how often, based on what etc)
