Thanks sorry so used to HP from days as hospital technician that it didn't even register that it's Packard Bell just so used to saying HP.
It has served well for its life and can still be used for other non vital stuff by husband until it completely dies.
I appreciate everyone's help in deciding what to get thanks again.

Ancient computer easy note ms model no HGL1. Manufactured 2009.
Knowing nothing about computers gave it couple of years ago for someone to clean up and it the ran slower than before.
Tried for new battery cheapest on Amazon approx 25 but won't deliver to Northern Ireland.
Just need something for homeworks that when you bring downstairs to print doesn't shut down as battery dead.
Also right click button doesn't work a pain to have to use mouse.
Why is the new one going to be so infectious???
A minefield and money making business and frustrating for people who just want kids to do homework!
Thanks for all the advice apparently there is space in new one for another hard drive if I want to put one in but I don't even know why I would want to.
Apparently it loads faster with Ssd which is why I didn't bother to upgrade.
Now to decide what anti virus to go for.
    Thanks everyone

Craftyc, hope you have enjoyed your new notebook!

The point I made was that "your Ancient computer" spec is not bad as you might think.

Intel® Celeron® Processor T1600 is used by your old notebook.

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Celeron+T1600+%40+1.66GHz&id=582

This is more or less is the same performance as the new cheap laptop, which is fully capable of daily basic use.

So if you simply replaced your old hard disk with a SSD, this will be very comfortable. I have observed that a lot of people simply replaced a cheap brand new notebook, but they are ripped off twice.

    1) Their new cheap computer performance is the same as their old one.
I am not saying this is bad, but they believe newer is much better, and they only believe that buying new stuff is only the practical solution.

    2) Their new cheap computer use still old hard disk, they are not offered SSD upgrade option.

Your computer slowness is not related to the old hardware, but to the software; after the lengths of the use of Windows, the computer became unbearably slow. As donniedarko said, fresh OS installation (and SSD) will make your old computer blazingly faster again. I just wanted to clarify my points.

I am not against getting a new one at all, and you are cleaver enough to find this MSE tech postings. (It seems all of your HP stock has gone now lol)

    Happy computing.:)

Jumping on the bandwagon - I'm looking to buy my son a laptop. Having a look at the cheaper end of the market, the benchmark on this AMD seems reasonable for the price.

    Opinions? https://www.tesco.com/direct/hp14-an001na-e2-14-quadcore-laptop-with-4gb-ram-500gb-silver/681-5343.prd?skuId=681-5343#reviews

There's £20 off the laptops online, so I thought £220 seems reasonable for the spec

edit: Found this on ebuyer .. better CPU and more HD, with its own graphics card. The CPU benchmark seems higher.. http://www.ebuyer.com/786174-hp-255-g5-laptop-1tt38es-1tt38es-abu
