Don't quite agree with the spending distribution.

I would spend more on the laptop and get a 120 GB SSD if necessary to cost down on costs.

Unless you have a machine in mind for £150 that isn't five years or more years old with a useful warranty(?) Perhaps provide some links that can be scrutinised.

Why buy a seven year old machine, so that you have to spend £30 to £40 more on a battery replacement?
It might be solid, but it's still seven years old. Newer business machines will have better performance and support in years to come.

Thank you for your thought. Here is my idea :)

    NOTEBOOK

At 150 pound, but I would find less than 5 years old business notebook. There are so many good deals. I have just found the below. (I bought 6-7 years old at 50 pound with much better keyboard, but it is HEAVY lol)

HP EliteBook Folio 9470m i5-3427U 1.80GHz, 8GB 180GB Windows 10 Home (It seems this includes a SSD ? So you don't need to buy a 256GB!! ) at £ 151.20 free delivery with 90 days warranty from a decent supplier.

Disclaimer: This is not my recommendation, I don't use this EliteBook Folio 9470m by myself, I don't like this kind of keyboard, older keyboard is much better for me. Just reference only.

    Battery:
(This should include as a part of 3-5 years running cost)
I just want to remind the cost of the battery. Even you would get 3 years old, you may need a battery within a year, or 5 years old can use another 2 years without battery replacement.

    SSD:
As long as you get a SSD, you will be happy as well as myself .:rotfl: 120GB is 45-55 pound, 250GB is 70-90 pound, So 250GB is more cost effective to me.

It does not matter how old computer is when you install a SSD! I would say SSD would be more important with older hardware in terms of data protection. (?) But I do understand your point as well.
It's not just 'plasticky'. It's low spec and made to a price point.

You guys know what you are doing :T Let's not encourage buying cheap disposable grade computers!

No point to keep buying cheap crap computer for every 2-3 years. You never ever save money ! (and you never ever get a SSD until 2019/20 ? Get a SSD by yourself NOW)

Save £££ as well as this planet! No more silly eWaste!

I always measure a laptop by how easy to upgrade (hate Acer in this regard) this is not as easy as those with access panel but it is modular and so simple that a child could do it:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UNAN9u_0xA

It IS an SSD, can go to 250gb for £10 more or get it for £142.20 if you drop the OS.

If you can stomach the keyboard not bad for an ultrabook that sold for over £1000

    MEMORY 8GB
    HARD DRIVE 180GB
    HARD DRIVE TYPE SSD
    MODEL EliteBook Folio 9470m
    PROCESSOR Intel Core i5-3427U CPU @ 1.80GHz
    PROCESSOR TYPE i5
    PROCESSOR GENERATION 3rd Generation
    PROCESSOR COUNT Single Processor
GRAPHICS CARD 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
    SCREEN SIZE 14-inch
    SCREEN TYPE LCD
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !

Cannot see the spec. Do you have a link please?
EDIT: sorry my javascript was off...strange size for an SSD? Typo possibly?
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Thanks to op for starting this thread and those who have given advice. Was just about to spend £50 on new battery for an ancient HP laptop 2GB windows Vista !!but have followed the thread advice and bought a refurb laptop instead.
Edit to add if you don't upgrade to 250 it is Ssd if you upgrade to 250 it's just hard drive I phoned and asked. So both posters are correct to an extent.

The things that go on behind closed doors.

Not really excited by some, HP machines, but perhaps their business products are better. Also, those in the know are somewhat put off by their habit of blocking you from installing certain components by way of a whitelist.

Now you have obtained another machine, perhaps you can clean up your old machine by clean installing an OS, to have it there as a useful back up. New battery shouldn't cost more than around £12.
    Which model exactly?

Business Model = "Maintenance Friendly" :) Wow, it was 14inch model, with a standard 2.5 inch SSD. So tempting ... lol (My 15 inch EliteBook is VERY Heavy to carry ...)

Once you have migrated to your new notebook (data transfer etc) . Please consider your HP vista notebook to use as a backup computer. (Anyway your new Windows 10 would be so infectious... So you will need a decent backup) .

    Revitalizing "Ancient" Laptop

    Install LinuxMint 18 MATE

    https://linuxmint.com/download.php

Even I would suggest to install a SSD to your "ancient HP laptop". (Serious!) I can virtually grantee your ancient HP will be blazingly faster and reliable than a brand new disposable grade notebook.

Please note older consumer model is not as bad as current one. Even you used to get a 3 years manufacture warranty as an option.

If you would be interested in this option, please let me know the exact model etc. I love to assist your current HP laptop as well.

    Happy computing!

Ancient computer easy note ms model no HGL1. Manufactured 2009.
Knowing nothing about computers gave it couple of years ago for someone to clean up and it the ran slower than before.
Tried for new battery cheapest on Amazon approx 25 but won't deliver to Northern Ireland.
Just need something for homeworks that when you bring downstairs to print doesn't shut down as battery dead.
Also right click button doesn't work a pain to have to use mouse.
Why is the new one going to be so infectious???
A minefield and money making business and frustrating for people who just want kids to do homework!
Thanks for all the advice apparently there is space in new one for another hard drive if I want to put one in but I don't even know why I would want to.
Apparently it loads faster with Ssd which is why I didn't bother to upgrade.
Now to decide what anti virus to go for.
    Thanks everyone

It seems you have confused Hewlett-Packard for Packard Bell. :)
