The best way of improving your credit record is to have one credit card (ideally the oldest one you have), use it regularly and pay it off every month. Don't default on payments.
It is your credit record that lenders look at not scores so defaults will affect eligibility as will affordability.
It may be the default which caused Capital one to decline you or it may be a myriad of other reasons they use to credit score your application using their criteria. Mortgaged generally scores higher than rented. If you frequently move or have not live in your property for very long or are not on the electoral roll this will score low. If you have other debts and are only paying minimums and are using a lot of your available credit this will also cause them to score low.

Try mycashpluscredit card not the pre paid one.
my1stcard during dmp
high apr +40% though you could build up your rating by spending on the card and paying in full each month-like 0 interest.
think theres a 10.00 yearly fee.
Ive had 1 since 2013 used forr online supermarket shopping/home delivery
only 250 limitt though 0 increases.
Sounds like you have to borrow small to re build your rating (dont concern yourself with the score)
Avoid lots of applications-if Cap1 said no then avoid aqua etc for some time-I only got my 2 aqua cards last year and a few weeks ago.
I thought one of the conditions of a DMP was you did not take out further borrowing?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. Can only speculate on why declined but here is some things to help you.
Things that I believe affect chance of been accepted are.
Long time at current address - indicates stability
Providing a landline number - indicates stability
Long time in employment - indicates stability
Been older - the older you are the more of a history you have.
Been on electrol roll - I dont think this is as important as is made out but it still affects the chance.
Having existing credit - is good as it means you have a record for them to check, as long of course you not defaulting.
Not over utilising existing credit - dont want to apply for a new card when all existing cards maxed out.
Size of payments - Always try to avoid making minimal payments, if you cannot afford to make large payments at least pay a bit over the minimum payment. If you pay off your card in full every month, then lenders will love you, 0% cards will be easy to get.
Bank account - dont hop between banks, having a long financial history with a bank works in your favour.
Now if you have no reasonable credit history so e.g. no current credit, and default 5 years ago, then get yourself into a phone contract or some other minor form of credit, make sure you uphold your end of contract and that will help and might be enough to get you onto a high risk card. Once you get your first credit card, use it every month for normal stuff like food shopping and pay it off in "full" every month. It wont take long for you to become a "desirable" customer.
My first credit card in my current stint of cards was a capital one card with a £200 limit, a sign that I was becoming more desirable was they kept pumping up the limit without me asking, eventually the limit got over 6k. After advice from my dad I applied for a 0% card (tesco) and was accepted after a rated 99% chance of approval.
In regards to the chance rating, I dont know how accurate they are, but even at 100% I wouldnt say its a cert, there is still checks done based on what you put on the application and whatever other checks they carry out.
Credit scoring does happen but each company scores in their own way, the score from the agencies, is just them using their own algorithms to give consumers some kind of friendly feedback system. Companies dont use those scores.0 -
Anyone got any tips?
Go to your bank and say you want to open a credit card. They have a greater visibility over your bank account & you can hope they'll be more open with you as they won't want to lose your business.PeacefulWaters wrote: »Their name doesn't matter at all.
If you live with someone who has exactly the same name then it's going to be difficult to separate your credit reports. Even more so if you also share the same birthday. Fortunately this won't happen very often. People born on the same day with the same name have been known to be issued duplicate national insurance numbers too.0
