It would seem like you have a broken piece of software, and not a hardware fault, although the HDD could be coming to the end of it's working life, so the advice given above is all valid.

Which is a component of XP and IE.

So perhaps follow the instructions in the first link.

The second has tips on scanning for system errors (sfc /scannow).
