Just a comment....you have been very lucky that probate hasn't been a requirement so far.....one building society wouldn't release funds after my mother's death...and it was £10.78 !!

It really is not such a big deal as you seem to imagine. My brother and I applied for probate on my father's will ourselves. It was straightforward and much cheaper than employing a solicitor. Once the paperwork came back, we went to a local solicitor and swore the oath. The whole thing was wrapped up in about 8 weeks.

We didn't rush to get started though. We left a few months from the death before we felt ready to tackle it.

It's the Nottingham Building Society. We've conceded now and will be spending the bank hols weekend doing the form filling! Thank you all for your advice and encouragement :)

Now having a hoohah with Axa travel insurance. Mum and Dad were due to go on two holidays, and despite sending them all of the documentation they asked for, they've emailed telling us we haven't sent it, argh! I know it was all sent as I put it in the envelope, sealed it and sent it recorded delivery myself! They don't half ask stupid questions - when did a medical practitioner recommend we cancel the holiday... well no one did, but given he was in ICU on the Wednesday and due to fly to Guernsey the following Thursday, it was pretty obvious to us that he wasn't going on holiday! Then asked if it's the same reason for cancelling both holidays! Erm, yes...

Sorry, bit of a tangent rant there!

You are welcome! Amazing how people that stupid can hold down a job. If you have time make a formal complaint to AXA and if that fails their regulator. Also the Sunday Times has a column every week that takes up reader's cases and usually wins. The rant hit the bullseye rather than being off at a tangent!
