Worth pointing out that it's far cheaper for the NHS to provide free vaccinations than deal with the consequences of contracting a nasty disease while abroad, and making it home for treatment.

It comes out of the GPs own budget and it's up to them how they use their own funding.

For what it's worth, if people get ill from something they can get vaccinated against, even if only privately, and they choose not then as far as I concerned the NHS shouldn't treat them, like Travel insurance wouldn't cover them. They've knowingly put their health at risk. People need to take some personal responsibility, although I realise less and less people do these days.

So you've advocate the NHS not treating accidents ? Let car crash victim die ? Or leave a broken leg to heal badly because a child was climbing a tree ?

I sort of see what you are getting at, but the NHS doesn't operate in that way. The closest it gets (I believe) is getting the severely obese to commit to weight loss via diet prior to doing gastric surgery.

Well there's an election coming up - if they don't like the way the NHS operates they could stand as a candidate and propose the reforms they're suggesting in this thread ;)

What have accidents etc got to do with travelling without vaccinations?

No it doesn't, but perhaps it should? Not that the NHS will be around in its current form in a few years time unless something changes or they get more funding. If people knowingly put their health at risk why should they get free treatment?

The link is taking appropriate steps to avoid an incident.

Vaccinations save the NHS money. Making people pay for vaccinations would cost the NHS money.

Which would you prefer ? Your denying people treatment doesn't exist, so which is your preference in reality ?

I'm suggesting it's cost effective for the NHS to provide free vaccinations, rather than be lumbered with the costs of treating infectious or pathogenic diseases.

    ........

    The NHS begs to differ.

The highlighted bit is wrong, according to the NHS themselves, hence the initiative quoted in post 4.
The unhighlighted bits don't make grammatical sense, so overlooked.

    No it doesn't.

Deepest apologies for lack of grammatical sense - I really shouldn't compose responses on a smart phone. They make little sense.

The point is the defense of the NHS funding travel vaccinations because it prevents disease outbreaks, and the high costs of treating someone in hospital if they bring back a preventable disease.

If you have a cost effective way of treating a disease, rather than preventing disease then many huge pharmaceutical companies would like to hear from you.

I think that a little commen sense needs to be added here, everthing in life cannot be for free, some people will pay large sums of money for overseas holidays/travel but try to scimp on the addons that are needed, the frequent posters on this site will all of seen the " did not get insurance but now have a problem " type messages or paid thousands for a holiday and " the airline want to charge me for the best seats " messages.
Whilst this is a moneysaving site i repeat not everything can be free and as the NHS is not a bottomless money pit,in this case if jabs are needed, pay for them and get on with your holiday planning.
