Mobile Police Van - Distance checker?

I was doing +-46/47 mph in a 40mphnzone, and I saw a police van parked in the centre of the road. It was about 300/400 m away, I literally hit breaks and carried on by at 35mph. The back of the van was facing me, with its back window half open, I couldn't see a gun but assume it may have been inside? What distance could they snap you at?
What penalties can I except if caught ?

They can snap you at 999 meters. If you are the registered keeper you will know within 14 days if they got you.

If you haven't done one you will probably get a speed awareness course. If you have it's likely to be 3 points and £100.

46/47 according to your speedo? If so I doubt you'll have anything to worry about.

Indeed. Enforcement would normally begin at 46mph but speedos tend to over read. Keep your fingers crossed yours isn't hyper accurate.

Hope it's not a Saab, like I just got rid of, that was "hyper accurate"

It's a Peugeot 106. 2013 reg,. Never been zapped before. But this week has not been fortunate so far, so won't be shocked for this icing on the cake :( I wasn't even supposed to be headed in that direction. And 5 minutes later returned on that road and they'd gone... Grrr

If I get an option to take a speed awareness course, do you still get points?

You may well be ok. If you get any paperwork be prompt returning it and you will get a course. It's circa £90 and about 4 hours long. That avoids points and the vast majority of insurance companies don't ask about courses.

If you do get any paperwork through feel free to ask for further advice if you neeed it.

The bad news is that when you first spot the van, there's a second of thinking time, a second of panic, then you hit the brakes, then you look at your speedo, by which time I guess there's a 5mph bleed-off. The good news is that your speedo could be reading about 2mph more than actual.

Both my car and Mrs U's car show exactly the same differential when compared with our sat navs. There again, the sat navs may be screwed. Neither the speedos nor the sat navs I suspect are pinpoint accurate.

Keep us informed to see if that theory pans out.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

If the van had gone five minutes later I doubt while you were travelling the original way that anyone was monitoring the road.
