Do cats go senile?

Thanks to all for your kind replies. I insisted she's brought indoors, soaking wet drowned rat as she was, and kept indoors against her will because although their garden is safe and secluded, I thinks she's vunerable and as she's so weak, defenceless too. I'll go and see them at the weekend (long journey that I can't do weekdays). Kinda looks enevitable now.....

Would she be any good with a little kennel or shelter outdoors? My little chap has the outside loo as his "house" (loo's been removed and blocked). He has a fleece blanket, a bowl of water and some plastic bags (he likes the crunchy feel), and he just sits there with the door open, watching the world go by.
Obviously, it's no good for her to be sitting in the rain getting cold and wet
... you sound like a very caring (man?), and I'm sure you'll do what's best for your Mum's moggy. Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

My girl is (we think) 20 - she 'talks to the ghosts' (stares & yowls at corners etc) sits under her tree in the garden, is totally deaf, makes the daftest noise ever (esp since she lost her voice to cat flu years ago!) and I love her to bits.
Good luck xxx
Yep we are convinced she calls out to her kittens, deaf as a post as she is.0 -

She has a kennel but continues to dent the flower bed!0 -
I have a cat who is 10 and she will suddenly let out a yowl like she is in pain. She did it yesterday at the water bowl, I went running to her and she just looks at you as if ... yes can I help you? The water bowl was full and she was fine, just daft. They definately do get senile, we had an old cat that used to also love being outside and used to lick the soil from under the hydrangeas!
As another poster said though do get her teeth in particular checked out.0 -
Definitely take the cat to the vet - ours had a thyroid problem which caused loss of appetite and severe weight loss, but picked up after treatment.
It's always a good idea to see the vet - at least you'll know one way or the other and will be able to make life as comfortable and happy as possible for the moggie if the worst case is confirmed. Best case is that its treatable and moggie has a few more years yet...0 -
A quick update she's now warm and dry, sleeping in the utility room and not wanting to go out! Taking on a bit more food and liquids too. Going to the vet on saturday morning to get her checked over.0

Thanks anniestar. The vet said we're doing all the right things but it's possible she may have had a minor stroke. Nothing further we can do. She did purr for a little bit but as I said, she's very weak now. She could tick along for quite a while or she might not - who knows. I did feel I was saying goodbye when I left. I'll keep you posted.0
