I did 100K miles on the original disks and pads in an old car I owned and sold it with those same disks and pads. 23K miles is nothing, 50% worn at 23K miles means at least another 2 years of average miles motoring before anything needs replacing.

The funny thing is the people braking at every corner arnt even going fast it just seems to be an automatic reaction when they see a corner. They seem to go along at around 40 - 45 MPH then brake slightly everytime they see a corner, only slowing down a few MPH then accelerating slightly.

If your pads don't last atleast 50k your one of these people aswell!

Mine last well past that. thanks.

My previous post was firmly tongue in cheek and aimed at the "brakes are for stopping, throttle's for going" brigade - hence the (I thought) fairly obvious winking smiley.

The front pads on my Fiesta didn't need changing until the 85K mark and the rear shoes are still fine on 95K.

I usually get 50-80k out of pads . I rarely use the brakes as it is an addmission of a failure to manage the energy used by the vehicle.

Brake pad compounds wear down over time and distance - better be safe than sorry. No way would I wait 23k miles before replacing mines.

    Complete and utter twaddle.

My car is on 23,000 miles and just over 3 years old. I assume it still has the original brake pads
They're now down to 50% worn.

Using this logic, assuming you drive the same as before, they'll last another 3 years or 23,000 miles. Nothing wrong with 50% worn pads. Even if you don't have electronic sensors, they're meant to squeal when they're at the end, and even if you miss that, you'll notice that that black brake dust on your wheels will turn a bronze-y colour - that definitely means 'change now'!
Also, should the discs be done at the same time as the pads, even if they are ok?

No. Pads are the bit that's meant to wear, discs are not.

Discs are (usually) made of relatively soft cast iron.

They wear and should be replaced at, or before they reach, the minimum specified thickness.

The same applies to brake drums.

    Extreme example of disc wear...

    OK I'll bite.
What vehicle are the brake pads on?
No "lifetime" scheme is going to keep on changing pads if not needed surely?
If they're worn out at 5K then either there is something extremely wrong with the vehicle, or your driving.
