BEWARE - washing machine insurance cold calls

  • Some are random, some you have foolishly given to a company.
I keep getting them and I always politely ask for my name to be taken off their list, then another one pops up,. This morning one with no number, she called from India, she told me.
    • Received a call with CLI of 020 8619 7610 from fake washing machine warranty scammer. He had clearly bought my data from somewhere as he seemed to know I had a washing machine warranty years ago and had my first and last names and the last 4 digits of an old card number. Tried to con me by selling me a 3 year washing machine warranty but hung up when I asked why he hadn't emailed details of his company or warranty through but was trying to get me to disclose my card number and CLI. Caller was clearly UK based and born with a very clear and confident south london working class accent.

Action Fraud said there was no warranty and they would just have taken my money and then charged more to the card a few months later if I hadn't stopped it by then.

Action Fraud website impossible to use for scammer that one only has phone number and Modus Operandi for so had to make a big fuss on phone line to get them to report it.  Get the impression they are not really interested unless you have actually been scammed and lost money rather than just suffered an attempt to scam.

Plusnet Caller Protect totally and utterly useless and just let the scammer through.  No point blocking the number as it is not a real number and they constantly change the numbers they use to make these calls.

I had one of these calls this morning. Guy said he was from a firm called APC (phone number 01344 999699) and that my washing machine warranty was about to run out. I said I didn't have a warranty on it and he said it was the manufacturer's warranty. I then said it must have been a heck of a good manufacturer's warranty as the machine is over 10 years old! At that point he just said 'OK' and ended the call.

Clearly a scam call as all numbers beginning with '99' for any geographical area code are 'protected'.

IMO treat ALL cold calls as scams, in this day and age there are scalawags and bandits who will chance their arm trying to get money from anyone. I immediately  terminate any phone call if I do not recognise the caller or if it's an international call. If it's important they will ring back if they know you.

If Ive got time and I’m in the mood, I sound very interested and grateful for the call. It gets to the bit where I go and get my card details I put the phone nearby and get on with whatever I’m doing. It’s quite amusing to see how long they’ll wait for me to come back. They’ll keep calling my name and sometimes I pick the phone up but remain silent. They think there’s someone there but not sure and it’s hard not to laugh. Eventually they put the phone down but ring back shortly after thinking we were cut off. I apologise and we do the whole thing again! Well it amuses me sometimes if I can be bothered. Another good one is to pretend I’m deaf and get them to keep repeating themselves before they realise I’m taking the Mick! If they’re spending all that time on me they’re not bothering someone else, you’re welcome.

They are, sadly, still at it in 2021.

Had a call from 'Domestic Appliances' an hour ago [020 3332 3017]. Persistent devil so I simply hung up on him and blocked the number. Pretty pointless as they just use different numbers but it made me feel good.

They have phoned me about 20 times since September 2020. I completely lost it with one guy and he got a complete earful

Just put the phone down straight away or better still don't answer it. I never answer calls from numbers that I don't recognise and don't get any now as they obviously have me down as a "non-responder".
