Cooker Switch

Had my lovely new cooker delvered yesterday. Paid for installation. Chap couldn't do it as switch to close to the cooker? So now I have to find an electrican to move the switch before it can be installed? When did this come into force, only had last cooker installed a few years ago and this wasn't a problem

You have given us no indication as to what you mean by "too close".

The "regulations" do not stipulate a minimum distance for an electric hob. Only that the isolator switch should not be placed above the hob and is easily accessible. Guidance notes recommend between 300mm* and 2000mm from the hob/oven and 1200mm from the floor level.

Note - Some sources suggest that 100mm is acceptable, but the manufacturers installation notes should be followed where practical.

One of the guys that delivered the cooker was also the installer. He measured the distance of the switch from the hob and said it was too close. They are going to refund my installation fee, but I now have to hunt around for an electrician. Just wondered if anybody else had had this happen to them.

What are you actually fitting? An electric hob, or a freestanding cooker? What was there before?

It is a freestanding electric cooker, and a free standing electric cooker was there before (well still is as they refused to install the new one).

    This.

Distances are taken from "guidelines." If the installer has been told he has to comply with those "guidelines" then it would have been difficult for him to defy them.

But as long as it's not too far away, or directly above it, it can be connected in. I'd probably plumb it in if it was in a cupboard for a 4 pack:beer:

Just measured - the switch is 23 inches from the cooker.

So some 580mm away - This is within guidelines of between 300mm and 2000mm, and is a perfectly reasonable distance from the cooker. The "installer" was just trying to get out of doing the job methinks.
