DVLA, Advantis Debt collectors
Hello there,

I have received a letter from Advantis acting on behalf of the DVLA regarding a late payment for my road tax (from April 2016). I realise it is my responsibility to keep my road tax up to date, but as soon as I realised that my tax was due I got it sorted. Again, all correspondence sent to the incorrect address (as I was not aware that I had to update my V5). I am aware now and everything is up to date.
I can't seem to find any information here. If anyone could help me with drafting an appeal to the DVLA, it would be much appreciated.

Don't bother, you won't win. You're bang to rights for not paying the VED, not updating the V5 (it says on the front of the damn thing that you have to keep it up to date), and then presumably you've ignored all the attempts to enforce the fines that have now been passed on to the debt collectors.
Pay up, before your telly gets taken.0 -
Why are you planning an appeal. As you just stated you are bang to rights for not paying road tax and not updating your V5C. You now must face to consequences and pay the fines. Pay now before you get court costs on top.
Presumably you told everyone else you were moving house, why not the dvla. While its fresh in your mind remember to check your MOT and insurance or up to date As Well.0 -

I thought that by updating my address on drivers licence (which I did at every house move) was kosher, to discover recently that my V5 had to be up to date as well. Even though it says to keep the address up to date on the V5, I've kept it filed and in a safe place- it's not like anyone would have it stuck to the fridge...! If you read the OP correctly, I did not ignore anything as I DID NOT receive anything...
I would appreciate helpful posts instead of negative unhelpful comments- albeit if I don't have a chance to win or not. No need to be nasty, I'm just reaching out for advice.0 -

Well I'm sorry if the truth is offensive to you, but I'm not going to cuddle you and tell you everything will be OK. Advice comes in many forms and doesn't have to agree with your point of view to be valid.
Your V5 is very clear. The fact you didn't bother to familiarise yourself with all the responsibilities of vehicle ownership is nobody's fault but your own. I'm not 'being nasty' - I'm telling you the facts. You need to 'man up' and accept them.
You didn't receive anything because you failed to update DVLA with the address at which your vehicle was registered - that's a different thing to your driving licence. My motorhome, which I own, is registered in my Dad's name at his address, as he is the one who insures the vehicle. My driving licence is in my name at my address - see the problem there? DVLA are not mind-readers.
Are you seriously saying that in 'every house move' you've done, you've not once opened a filing cabinet? Or that when you received the V5 for your car you didn't take a cursory glance over the information printed on the document? Or that you didn't read the helpful leaflet supplied with the V5?
Do you habitually not bother reading official documents, or is the V5 an exception?
I'm sorry if you think that anyone who doesn't share your misplaced sense of injustice is being horrible to you, but that's life. You need to take responsibility for your actions and pay up. End of chat.0 -
For the reasons already given you can't win an appeal. I would suggest that you pay up as soon as possible to avoid the bill getting any bigger, which it will do if they have to spend time chasing the debt. And go through your other documents to see if anything else should have been updated but hasn't been.0

A response like agrinnall's is sufficient, unlike the self righteous one of beenthroughitall (#coolyajetsphycho!).
I will get in touch with Advantis and sort it. Thanks for your help0 -
Yeah
Try and get paid off asap and get it confirmed in writing/email that no further money is due to the collectors.0 -

Boo hoo. Get a grip.
Oh, and it's 'Psycho'. A pejorative term, quite offensive to those suffering from a real mental illness like psychosis. You're clearly quite unpleasant as well as disorganised.0 -
