Hi
I bought a used car (less than 1 year old, low mileage) from Main Dealer last week. A few days ago I noticed (by chance) on the sunroof a very small crack (about 1cm length).
In fact the crack appears to be in the middle layer of the glass sunroof. Took it to the dealer today, and they agree its not caused by a stone chip (it has not gone through to either side (yet)).

Obviously this is a major issue (as well as another fault with the vehicle - less serious). Dealer has already told me its not covered under warranty, and will speak to the General manager before confirming what options (if any) are available to me. I am surprised manufacturer wont cover this as it is an obvious parts defect not caused by external impact.
What do you recommend I can do? I am really concerned that this does not spread over time. What are my consumer rights dealing with a main dealer?

any help appreciated.

Weren't you advised in another thread to exchange the vehicle as you're not happy with it?

that is an option, but i am told only on faults they agree on, and looking at their stock list no similar models in stock. I very much doubt a dealer will honour this and hence why i was asking for some help.

If it's in the middle layer and you can't feel the crack from the top or bottom, then I would use a marker pen to mark the ends of the crack and keep an eye on it.
The trouble with sunroofs is that they're really hard to seal properly when replaced and you could end up with all sorts of problems if you change the glass.

It won't be insurance fraud if he claims when/if it breaks, as it apparently is not broken now.

If it doesn't ever get any worse, no need to fix it, so no need to claim.

However, I doubt if the glass cover extends to panorama roofs or sunroofs.

a sunroof claim on my current insurance is counted as a fault claim. Is there any such type of repair kits which could be applied to such a type of glass fault?

When you say "sunroof", do you mean the "traditional" relatively small opening glass panel - or do you mean a full bonded panoramic roof?

I presume by "middle layer", you mean the latter. TBH, if this really is the middle layer (how are you determining this?), then it can only be a manufacturing issue, so really should be covered under the manufacturer's warranty, rather than the used car warranty which is probably what the dealer was referring to.

I mean a full panoramic roof (fixed, non opening type).
The crack cannot be felt on top or underneath, so it appears to be in a middle layer of the glass. Dealer has told me its not covered under warranty, unless it was leaking (which it is not). I would have thought it would be a manufacturing issue as well, as no stone chip or impact can be seen on it.

I would guess the insurance will have a different opinion to the dealer on that one.
