Compaq mini 110. Enter Current Password

I have had to cut the power and remove the battery, then wait a bit to get a new screen.
pressing F2 or F12 does nothing
sometimes it wont let me do anything , other times it will but so far nothing has worked
Now it just says Enter CURRENT Password: but it doesn't allow me to enter anything

You have to enter any password 3 times one after another. After the third time below the existing writing, a code appears.

If what you type does not appear, plug in a usb keyboard

If it's a bios password take out the cmos battery, wait for 30 secs then put back in.

That has not worked for years. Flash memory put an end to that trick ages ago... a bit like putting the hard disk in the freezer trick.
