Has anyone used refund protection on an Amex card?

Hi just made a claim on the refund protection loaded on my amex preferred gold charge card.

I bought a jacket from a UK retailer for £250 but decided it was unsuitable but (to my dismay) I was 1 day outside the returns window of 14 days and I was refused a refund!

I called Amex this morning and I filled a claim. Does anyone have any experience using this service? How long does it take to process? I presume you have to return the item to Amex, is this the case? I can't imagine what they would want with a coat! lol

Amex will charge it back to the retailer and return the coat if the retailer wants it...or use as a staff prize!

    I don't think there's any hope of a refund.

Perhaps if you define "unsuitable" you'll get a more accurate answer.

But if the goods are as described when sold then you won't get your money back.

The question is related to Amex services not the retailers refund policy. Thank you for response anyway

Have you asked them if they want the item back ?

As for how long it takes well again its another question you could ask AE.

So does Amex offer a service that refunds just because you want it despite not being entitled to it, or is it like a credit cards S75 protection?

Great. There's not a hope in hell of AMEX reimbursing you because you don't like the look of something you bought that's in perfectly good condition.

What makes you think they would?

This has nothing to due with finding difficultly on returning a faulty item to a store. Amex offers a service called refund protection to its gold and platinum card holders whereby if they offer an extended 90 day returns policy up to the value of £300 per item. For example you can use this service if you are outside the returns policy of the store. You can read more about it at Amex's website if you still need more information

Exactly! This service is not law binding such as protection offered by section 75 but rather an insurance policy offered on certain Amex cards.

They extend your refund period to 90 days despite what the retailer offers.

I would never abuse this service because it is very decent of Amex to offer cover like this and i would hate it to be removed. However in this situation I was caught in a hop. I thought the retailer had a standard high street 30 day refund policy but it turned out they only offer 14 days so I have taken the opportunity to use the cover provided by amex to get reimbursed for a coat I'm never going to wear

    There's no such thing.

But it does seem in this case as if using your Amex card was a good move as it looks like your purchase is eligible for the refund. It doesn't say anything about having to hand over the goods to them so you may even end up with the jacket and your money back.
