2 routers on one line?

Hi,
We recently moved in with the on laws (we're building an extension to their property and moving in there in a few weeks) the current router only just gives coverage to the household at the mo, however when we move in to the extension, there's no chance coverage will reach us, and power lines aren't an option. I can't imagine an Ethernet bridge working either, so I'm wondering could we run two routers off the one phone line? Apparently the FIL can have 2 separate phone numbers running off the one line, could we do the same with a router?

You can't have two broadband services on one line, or two routers for one broadband service. The best option would be to run Cat 5 or 6 from the router to the extension and have a wireless access point in the extension0

The "router" is actually a combined modem and router. You can't have a second modem on a single line, the signal coming down the line can only be demodulated once.
You can have multiple routers if you know how to configure the network topology, but that's internet layer, it won't help with the link layer problem you're trying to overcome.
If the extension will have phone wiring, add ethernet wiring at first fix stage.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -

Why would you want to run two routers off one phone line...?dark_knight wrote: »Apparently the FIL can have 2 separate phone numbers running off the one line, could we do the same with a router?
If you could, what would be the benefit? The line would terminate at the same place in the house as it currently does. What would having two routers sitting side-by-side achieve?
I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do. Is there a reason that you can't, say, get a single fast unlimited connection and split the bill?
As above, a consumer "router" is actually a multi-device box (usually containing a router, broadband modem/bridge, NAT firewall, Ethernet hub and wireless access point).
If you have one line coming into the house, you could connect the router there, and run an Ethernet cable to a second "router". The second "router" wouldn't actually be doing any routing, but you could use the multiple Ethernet sockets and set up a second wireless network.
In other words, don't get a second phone line and run an extension phone cable to the extension building. Just run an Ethernet cable from the router to the extension building, and connect the second router there and use it as an Ethernet switch and wireless access point, not as an actual router.
If that makes sense...?0 -
I understand I'm just not sure if a) that's possible at this stage in building and b) I'm wondering if I'd maybe be better with a dedicated phone/bb line and having 100% of a fast stable connection rather than sharing0
